I do a letter of the week because my kids are younger (2.5 and under) and it takes them a while to recognize things (if that makes sense, I couldn't think of how to word it), but I just started doing it...we are on the letter C.. The kids love it, some of the older kids even tell their parents at drop off "the letter of the week is__ mom"! I also do a color and theme of the week.
In January I start a letter of the week. This gets us through to the end of the school year. We find a theme to go with the letter, do crafts, and on Friday they bring in baggies with grocery and store flyers featuring images that start with that letter and we make a collage.
i do a letter a day and then we stop at 4 letters, friday is all review..
so monday is A, tuesday is a and b, and so on
so for example. we will do ABCD, M-T-W-TH, then on Friday we go over all of them. We play a game called make it say....its from zoo phonics..
I start with the sound of the letter only.....letters are only symbols to children and have no value or meaning.
so we always start with the sound. It is true that a child could never know the names of the letters and still be able to read if they knew the sounds of the letters.
if you ask a kid to read by letters, the word cat, they will use the symbols and say CAT, which will still hold no meaning to them.
but if you were to teach them the sounds and show them the word cat, then you would get them to sound it out. c- aa- t...
does this make sense? I have a video of one of my dck doing it, I can email it to you if wanted....

Oh yes absolutely! That's how I prefer to teach letters/reading/etc. I just can't get, oh anyone else on board. But I'm homeschooling my DD starting next fall, have a pre-k boy next fall, and have two spaces opening up that I would looooove to fill with more pre-k kids. So, I'm thinking ahead curriculum-wise. I was thinking letter of the day makes more sense becuase you review them more often rather than taking a whole year to go through the alphabet once, kwim?

I like how you do the letter of the day, but also review the previous letters each day then all of Friday.
I do the sounds too and do them all day. I have a 20 month here who does not say one word so I am always saying the sounds of letters to him. If someone were to walk by my window and could hear me they would probably wonder if I could talk...
