    Kansas Providers...

Does anyone in Kansas know if it's ok to have a daycare that's not in the home you actually live in?

    Here's the sitch:

We live in a smallish town about 30 minutes away from a large city (Wichita). The home we live in now is owned by my parents and we are basically rent-to-owning it from them. We used to live in the larger city, but moved here specifically because this house is perfect for childcare plus this is where my family lives. My DH's family lives in the bigger city and relies on my husband quite a bit for various reasons. They are super close knit.

Today we found out some alarming news about DH's mom... she has a mental condition that is getting progressively worse.

DH really wants to move back to the larger city so that we can basically take care of his mom. I'm all for it... but I have my licensing inspection on the 20th of this month... so I'm not liking the idea of having to pack up and move to the other city and basically start all over.

So my question is basically can we use a home for daycare that we don't live in?

Thank you so much in advance!

ETA: I've been searching the regulations, but can't find anything. I'm just afraid it would technically be a "center" if no one actually lives in the house.

I'm in KS and I am almost certain that you can't have a home or group daycare here in a home you are not living in. And I don't think you can have a center licensed in a residential house.

I went to a "daycare closing" sale a few years back and the provider said she was renting the house just to use for daycare but had to "live there" per licensing so she put a bed in one room and stayed the night a few nights a week.

Call your licensor to make sure though!

I am in Wichita. I don't see anything in the regulations about it. However, I think that you have to live in the home to have a home child care or be zoned for commercial use for center type care. I would call licensing (Kansas Department of Health and Environment-316-268-8351 for Sedgwick county). I have worked with Adrienne and Jennifer and they are both really helpful. I'm sure they could answer your questions or at least direct you to who you need to speak with.

Thank you both... that's what I was afraid of. No big deal, I guess. I'll call licensing here in El Dorado in the morning.
