    Volunteers

Do volunteers in California have to have CPR/First aid?

I had someone interested in volunteering and potentially going part-time. I wasn't sure what the requirements were...aside from finger-printing.

Does anyone have a sample contract that they use with employees and/or volunteers? And a list of expected duties to be performed?

If they are a volunteer, and there for less than 15 hours per week, they do not need fingerprinting or CPR/First Aid. UNLESS, you want to include them in your ratios. If you do, then they have to have everything, otherwise you can never leave them alone with the children.

Thanks crystal. Should I have this lady sign anything or agree to anything specific? I've never had a volunteer or employee before. But I do have a baby starting next month and any extra help would be great. I don't even know what duties to allocate to her to be honest.

Any extra advice would be appreciated.

Is this someone you know, or a random person wanting to volunteer?

If I didn't know the person, I would definitley go for the background check. You just never know, KWIM?

What types of things do you want her to do? Preschool type activities, tending to infants/toddlers, ec.? Also, I would ask her what her interests ae. Does she LOVE engaging children in art? Does she have a knack for designing environments? Can she rock circle time?

Also, what hours is she going to be there? If it is in the AM I would probably have her come in, help set up the activities for the day, do circle time 1-2 days per week (if she is comfy with that)

I would definitely write up a "contract", have her read your handbook, give her a tour...showing her all of the emergency info/conduct a fire drill etc. and have her sign stating that she understands all procedures. I would take a copy of her driver's license and I would add her as an "employee" on my insurance.

She called me and I don't know her personally. She is currently working for the school district (what she said). She said she wants to gain experience because she wants to work in the preschools.
