    I Just Became THAT Person!

My mom suffers from dementia and I recently discovered a great day program right in my town. They go on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and do crafts, outings, activities, and what amounts to circle time. Pretty much it's just like preschool when you think about it!!! So her first day was today, and I've been worried whether she'll like it and will participate. A few minutes ago I actually called the place and asked how she was doing! Asked if she was happy and participating. Then I realized I was one of those parents who sits at work and worries about their child at DC or preschool!!! I have had anxiety over this. She's not normally a joiner, so I hope she doesn't feel like I forced this on her.

thats awesome that they have a program, my parents aren't joiners either, I wonder if it has to do with their era.

Thanks, gals! I just picked her up and she seemed to enjoy it.

They had made a small kite using waxed paper with crayon shavings in between, and then you iron it to melt. Then use colored popsicle sticks for the four sides of the "diamond", and fabric for a tail. So cute!! I might end up getting lots of ideas from them!

They had shepherds pie with cornbread and a brownie, and she ate more of it than I've been able to get her to eat at home. I have thought that her loss of appetite could be in part due to being slightly depressed, and the director said the same thing. I think being in a fun, social setting boosted her mood and she had more of an appetite.

This may really be a positive thing!!! I still feel like a worried mom though! But it's a "good" worry I guess. I don't want her to just tell me she likes it even though she thinks it's childish or something. I just texted my brother in another state and asked him to all her and see what she says to him about it.

Anyway, it looked like a great program! Nonprofit organization, but they do charge $50 a day. It may be worth it if it has positives for her in terms of mood and appetite.

            Thanks for your support! lovethis

Good luck with this. I had my grampa here for a while and dementia is not easy to deal with. I hope she is able to enjoy her day away program and that you get a bit of "me" time where you don't have to worry about anyone other than yourself.

Sounds like a great program - your mom is lucky to have you taking such good care of her.

My Grandma didn't have dementia but she was the same way with food. When she was alone at home she hardly ate anything, but when she was in a group she'd eat like a horse!
