My policies state that a colored discharge for more than 5 consecutive days requires a doctor's visit....just in case.

I won't ALWAYS exclude but do reserve the right to do so depending on the age of the child and the amount of care they require.
Very true. I asked our doctor about the color one time and she said that sometimes it is just dependant on the thickness of it that can make it different color also. Blood is really not too bad either as the nose can be irritated, inflamed, dry etc. Unless it's excessive and the child is not acting like they feel good I would keep the child. I have had 3 here in the past 3 weeks that have all had the runny noses. I was constantly wiping one of their noses all day. Tis the season. We're finally able to open the windows around here, although now we have pollen issues. UGH!

I don't base my exclusion on the colour, more on the amount and how comfortable the child seems. I have yet to have a DCK with green runny nose, but I have had yellow, clear and white and every time it's still spread through the daycare, IMO it's all contagious unless it's something other then illness! Allerigies do produce a runny nose, but not the same way as with a cold...there is a difference!

I'd send them home AND ask they see the Dr. that you are concerned with the blood (could be from over blowing or infection) and that you are having a tough time containing it...or something like that!

Very good points.... Yes I agree that allergies usually present and look differently. Where I live I think the majority of people, both adults and kids, have seasonal allergies. My daughter and son do. I used to but for some reason they are just mild now. My husband never had them until he was like 35.

My daughter is just my allergic little thing, she's allergic to ants, has asthma, is allergic to penicillin and everything related to it... As well as Bactrim.... Makes things difficult sometimes. But gosh she's had sinus allergies baddddddd when she was little until they took out her tonsils and adenoids and after that she got a dramatic improvement.

Allergies can present with sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, post nasal drip symptoms etc.... Colds can have clear or colored snot. But the main thing my pedi says is that if it starts clear and then by day five turns green, then it's generally a sinus infection. She also says that suing antihistamines too much can cause a sinus infection.
