    Quick Question, Please Help

On Friday I sent home 2 sibling with runny nose (green) apparently they both caught a cold and had very bad couch over the weekend. Yesterday DCP kept them home but this morning they come in and dcg seems to still have green mucus with blood. Btw they both have allergies too

Is this normal? Should dcg be sent home?

Did mom take them to the doctor ??? Do they have a fever?? Allergies generally involve CLEAR nasal discharge, sometimes can be bloody. Green is another story.

No, DCP didn't take them to the doctor. When they were both sent home mom knew it wasn't the allergies. She said dck were sick all weekend no fever but lots of cough. Right now they both sound very congested and still runny nose except the boy. The dcg has green mucus with blood

Sounds like a doctors visit is needed. Do you have a policy for this??

            This is a tough one.

I would look at it like this.

Is the snot so bad your are constantly having to wipe their noses?
Is the coughing so bad it is creating a distraction or the child cannot cover their face so that they don't cough on others?
Lastly can they participate as normal.

Dcg is wiping her nose often. Within 30min she wiped it 5 times. Cough is not too bad, they both are full of energy :: it has always been like this ::

Speaking from experience. Doctors are not going to do anything for a cough and runny nose and you might have an upset parent in the end when the doctor says just let it work its course

Docs don't generally do anything for a cough and runny nose... However if it starts clear and ends green, that's a pretty clear indicator that its gone from a cold or allergies into something secondary... Generally my pedi says if it gives green after it starts clear... Or isn't improving within 7 days of the symptoms first starting, it's time to bring them in.

I agree and I'm not asking DCP to take them to the doctor either. I'm just asking if this is a reason to sent home. Not sure if they are contagious or not

Green doesn't always mean infection. Here is a great article about decoding snot colors... http://cocopreme.hubpages.com/hub/sn...ssnotcolormean

My policies state that a colored discharge for more than 5 consecutive days requires a doctor's visit....just in case.

I won't ALWAYS exclude but do reserve the right to do so depending on the age of the child and the amount of care they require.

Because there is blood, I would suspect a sinus infection and require a visit. They may very well need antibiotics. Although, I would just call Mom and ask her to get an appointment for as late as possible so she doesn't have to leave work to early. If they are behaving okay, I wouldn't require a quick pick up, just a Dr. visit at some point before they return tomorrow.
