    New Medicine

Alright so I have anither question/concern for you guys. Dcp came in this morning with 20 month old dcb and 4 bottles of the tummy yummy juice. she then proceeded to tell me that the doc put her son on a new allergy pill and that she is to crush it up and put it in a drink every 2 hours. So she expects me t I give him a full 8 ounce juice and let him carry it around until it is gone and then give another one. I dont allow the children to drink anything that is not 100% and they dont get to carry any drink around onky at meals and snacks unless outside on a hot day. My main concern is that if the drink gets sat down and I dont see it and sone2 onles take s a drink they will get his medicine also what if he doesnt finish the first drink before it is tine for the second? I just think there is a better way to do this new medicine. Especially at daycare. Please I need advice

What allergy med is every 2 hours? Do you know what the medicine is, in case of a reaction?

Per STATE regs, I have to have all medicines in the orginial container, with specific instructions...in writing, dosing & amounts with the parents signature to administer. I do NOT do OTC drugs at all, and the only RX drugs I will allow are ones that are emergency meds(like inhaler/nebulizer) or something that is more than 3x a day. (never happens)

so I call BS on an allergy med that is every two hours. I have been through a dozen allergy meds with my kids, and never had something every two hours.
And absolutely NOT allow drugs in a drink that other kids have access. Mom needs her kid at home, pronto.

I would nix that idea, based on the fact that I don't let them drink flavored drinks (everyone will want one) and I don't let them walk around with it.

Our cups are out all the time. They are on the counter at all times, and always full. But, they are full with water.

I don't have time to crush a pill every two hours and expect a kid to drink that.

They need to find a better solution, that's absurd.

That is a ridiculous amount of juice. The child will have blowing diarrhea in one day. Ive never heard of every two hours allergy meds. Get a doc order and consent to talk to doc. Also get a medical report on WHAT the child is allergic to. You may not be able to provide service if whatever he is allergic to is naturally in your environment.

There's a chance she could be dopeing him with knock out med so she can put him straight to bed after pick up

She us a generally good mom and one of my best parents her child has allergies during the spring and fall season. She has the juice pre mixed with the pill when she brought them this morning I will let her know upon pick up the I have to have a doctors note and in the original bottle to do this and it cannot be in juice or atleast that large of an amount. Do you have any suggestions as to what would make the pill easier for the child to take?

A compounding pharmacy can take any medication and put in a a form that is more appropriate to a 20 month old. I don't think I've ever run across a pill for a baby, but I don't have much experience in that area.

Have you received any documentation from the prescribing doc of WHAT the allergies are. The child is only 20 mo old...he hasn't had enough seasons to call this seasonal allergies.

                  Something smells fishy here.

You need to talk directly to the dr and find out what the med is...what allergies it serves...and if the medication can be dosed to have it done completely at home.

I don't think you can legally give premade meds like that either. I would never allow a parent to bring premade cups with meds. You need a dr order, a physical with diagnosis....the original container of the med with the doseing instructions and a written plan from the parent declaring what doses she is giving.

This would be illegal in my state so check with the state.

This doesn't sound right. When administering medication I had to have a doctors note, the medicine in the original container, as well as have parents sign off for each time I administered it (at pick-up). Once you get the medicine in it's original bottle it should say how it should be administered. You could also call any pharmacy and ask questions about how to administer a specific type of medication. I agree though, that that amount sounds like a lot. I also was never allowed to let kids walk around and drink, it can be a choking hazard. Not to mention, like you said, that if another child gets ahold of that bottle, that is just trouble waiting to happen.

Generally crushed pills can be put in a tablespoon of applesauce. That is what we I'd with my kido when he was young and had to have digestive enzymes. Original packaging and if your crushing a pill crusher. Every 2hours seems often unless if it is homeopathic.

Crushed pills can go into applesauce very easily but that's the last of my worries. I'm unaware as a nurse and mom to an allergic child of ANY allergy med for a child his age that's a pill.... Also I'm not aware of ANY allergy med that's every 2 hours.... And I've given a LOT of meds in my 20 years...

I also require the actual prescription bottles, and will not under any circumstances give a kid tummy yummy all day. My kids may get a treat once a month... Your right him walking around with that is illegal and dangerous. Is time to out your foot down to mom and explain why you aren't allowed to do it.

Wow at is scary!! And this is coming from a provider who administers amiodorone to one dkg... Via a j tube..l but what you've described to me is appalling

Now homeopathic may explain it but I would require an actual doctors note, prescription, and a declaration of exactly what the child is allergic to. I would also charge a medication administration fee for that level of care.

I had a mom who wanted her kid to have otc herbal sleep meds at night and had this whole routine the kid HAD to have to sleep. I refused to do the sleeping meds and within a few weeks had the kid going to bed just fine with nothing special. I told him to go to bed... that's it.

He didn't have any sleep disorder. It was all manipulation and a parent who wanted the easy way out.

This sounds very fishy and dangerous. I think the provider is taking the parents word and shouldn't.
