    CA Large License

I keep getting calls for infants and decided that I could handle 1 more as my infants are 17 & 19 mos. My dh is retired and home with me.

My neighbor had told me that they were getting their large license as all they have are infants. I just asked what they had to do to upgrade and he told me that they couldn't upgrade to a large because they lived within 500 ft of another daycare.

Does anyone know if this is true? I have an email into my analyst, but haven't heard anything yet.

I wish I had an answer for you.

I would love to expand but I refuse to "hire" someone and pay all the extra taxes.

I don't think so! That sounds ridiculous!

The only restrictions are square footage and we have to pass a fire dept. inspection.., have one year experience, assistant, an audible fire alarm that we can pull, and cribs with wheels,
I think that's it... It's been a long time since I did it.

I never heard of that. I have heard that they want you to have a licensed small family daycare (or have experience working at a center) for at least 1 year before you jump to a large family license http://www.dss.cahwnet.gov/forms/english/LIC279A.pdf and I have heard that landlords/HOA can prevent you from expanding to a large family http://ccld.ca.gov/res/pdf/FamilyChi...nantRights.pdf; but I never heard that living close to another daycare could prevent expansion. It could just be a city/county ordinance; especially if your area has a low population and a lot of child care home and/or center.

I don't know the answer, but am curious to hear if this is true. It would be a great situation for you, since you have your dh home with you and you wouldn't have to pay an assistant.

I've considered it since mine is also retired, but he has enough side jobs that I cannot always count on him being here all day (he is committed to being home at drop off and pick up times to help me, but that is it!)

He just came back over and said the city charges $3,700 for a large license. I think he got bad info from the city, not from licensing.

Could it be for licensing and zoning?

                hi there...

I wanted to chime in and offer my information..I am not sure if things differ by county, however, I have a large DC LIC

I paid $129 for the increase in my license. I did not have to have a certain SQ Ft in my home...here is what I did have to have.

1 year experience with dc or small lic
2 fire exits both with emergency egress handles installed
mounted fire extinguisher that meets the fire dept guide lines
smoke alarm installed in each room children will sleep in
1 smoke alarm within reach that can be used as a sounding fire alarm
                pass fire inspection
                post all fire exits
have a gate that the kids can open in my backyard since this is one of the fire exit routes
                post emergency evacuation plan
                pass 2nd state licensing inspection

I also have a neighbor who lives directly across the street from me who also has a large daycare...

                hope this helps..

Oh wanted to add, that when you have a large daycare, some cities require you to obtain a business license.

!! I just went large this past August. I was told that if there is another large daycare within 500 ft from my home, then I would not be able to upgrade. You can upgrade if there is a small daycare ( There is another day are provider 4 houses down samll daycare) and I was able to ge one. This depends on your county zoning. So you will have to call the county planning department. They are the ones that let you know if you can go large. Send this approval to licensing. So before you send your application to licensing you must contact he county first. Licensing has nothing to do with zoning regulations. I just went through this. My county was a little harder, and it cost me 250. Not bad your neighbor may be telling you this so you do not apply. If she does get her large license first then You will not be able to go large. Which is one of the reasons I went large. I didn't want to take the chance hat my neighbor would go large before me the I wouldn't be able too. I know it sounds harsh but I knew I wanted to go large eventually (which I ended up filling my spots within 2 weeks of upgrading) so I went ahead and did. I suggest you start with your county planning dept. your pretty close to me so I'm sure the regulations are he same. After you get the approval, before you send your application to licensing you have to write down your local fire department on the application you send in. Licensing will Contact the fire department who will the. Contact you to set up an appointment to come out and get a clearance. The fire dept will then send the clearance to licensing. then licensing will Come out for your unannounced upgrade visit. HTH

It may be a zoning issue and you may need a conditional use permit. It is possible that the city will not allow it. I would call the zoning department/assessors office and ask them.

I too have a large license. The city I live in "recommended" I obtain a business license, but was not "required" because it's a business that is operated out of my own home. There is another provider who live on the next block over that also has a large.

I was thinking about that earlier. I would possibly need someone to help cover for 1 1/2 hrs a day. It would cost me more for that short amount of time than I would make for the day on the one extra infant I would want.

                            Thanks for the replies.

                              This .

It deffinetely depends on your City and State ordinences as well as licensing requirements. I asked about this last month with my own city (as licensing suggested I do) and we have a 400 ft minimum distance in my city to open upgrade a sm FCC to a lg FCC. Here is the exact email I got last month about it (we also have a TON of other requirements for my city to pass the Fire Marshal's inspection and to get a Use Permit. The permit by itself costs $6,000).

                              Hi Marina
There are zoning requirements I can send you some information. But there is one very important requirement, which is there must be 400 square feet between one large home and another large home this includes front back and sides.

Once you know what city we can run a report of the number of large homes on a specific block.

                              Thank you
