They throw it at radiotherapy, dump it on eachothers heads, dump it on their own heads, dump it and throw it outside of the box!
When its empty, I'm NOT refilling it.

How old are they? I have the rule that if you throw the sand you are not allowed in the sandbox. I find that if I sit near the sand, or play in the sand with them, I can prevent most negative behavior. I try to stop most things before they happen.

I do both of these things. Taking away the privilege is such punishment to me! They are two, that's why. Its just no fun.

I think it is a natural consquence of throwing sand, not really a punishment. I don't say it mean I just direct them on to something else. I have a ton of outside stuff. I would just be worried about the kids getting sand in their eyes.
We had a sandbox and I hated it! Even the older kids were terrible about it. I was so happy when we sold it at a yard sale. I now have a sand table which I like much better. For some reason not being able to sit in it makes a difference here.
I love mine ... the parents hate the sand that goes home in the shoes.
throw sand and you are out. I try to catch them playing right and praise. we will go back to wearing a sticker and getting a stamp on it with me telling they did something good . We seemed to have forgotten safety rules over the winter.
We used to have two of those turtle-shaped sandboxes and they would always dump the sand outside of the box...so I got rid of those and built a huge eight foot square sandbox. Now all of the kiddos could fit in at once & there is enough room for many tools and creations at once. Rarely does anyone dump sand outside the box anymore.
I got rid of my sand my daughter would dump sand over her own head. Now I use the sand table for water the kids have an area in the yard where they did hole in the dirt. Yes they are covered with black dirt but it is easier to clean off w the hose and it is not as easy to throw. I also add a few dump trucks from a thrift shop and it has made a huge difference.
