    Policy on Diarrhea?

What's everyone's policy on sending kids home with diarrhea? I have a little 10 mo old here who is the poop king. Yesterday he had 5 dirty diapers alone. Today he was dropped off with a pretty normal dirty diaper and since then just in the past 2 hours he has had 2 BLOW OUT diarrhea diapers. Not only has he been leaving everywhere but he is now out of his back up clothes and also blew through a pair of my daughters shorts. At what point do you guys send home?

I don't go by a certain number, but if they are NOT on antibiotics, have NOT had shots, or any other explanation, if the poop leaves the diaper (aka blow out).. After the second one Ina day, they have to pick up.

I'd send home now if this is not normal for him and he hasn't eaten something he normally doesn't etc.

I put in a call to the parents after the 1st loose diaper, but over and over I get the parents saying it's teeth, it's from his cold etc.

Is he teething? Does he have a cold? Did the parents give any cold medicine yesterday ?

If its not normal for this child to have poops like the one he is having then I would inform the parents, let them know if he continues to have poops like that they will need to pick him up

It is usual for him to poop multiple times a day and for the consistency to vary but usually its more pancake like and he has never had a blow out. This is not his usual consistency and he hasn't had any meds or any shots. He is teething but they broke through the skin last week and aren't bothering him any more.

I'm in a center, but we send home after two diarrheas, unless they have a doctor's note that they are on medication that will cause them.

After the second episode of diarrhea the child is sent home.

I do NOT concern myself with WHY a child has anything.

Diarrhea is a sanitary issue that excludes a child from care.

                REGARDLESS of reasons or causes.

They can return when they have gone 24 FULL hours with no diarrhea.

yup. Why is not my issue, keeping a safe, sanitary environment for the group of children IS. If it blows out, you go home the second time.

Do a quick search of any centre's policies and you will see that diarrhea and vomiting are non-negotiable for going home. Too difficult to manage from an infection control basis.

AND If you don't currently have a written policy on one and your licensing people have a rule, type it all up and get parents to sign it as an updated policy. Here I can make my own policy on that but personally if a child has diarrhea because they always do on *********** etc I'm NOT going to refuse care to that child unless its a severe disruption. Unless, of course it has that familiar similarity to rotavirus or c diff (which if you've ever smelled it once you know when they walk in the door) .. Then they go immediately home with the first bad stool and have to have a stool negative to come back here. Other than the common known infectious things, it's no different than a cold. A lot of disinfecting.

Diarrhea and blow out's don't need to necessarily be synonymous at that age

I have two 10 month olds, both teething like crazy and both are incredibly mobile. They could have a perfectly healthy movement and still have a mess eek out a leg or up the back in a heartbeat because they are up and down and up and down and crawling all over and scootching everywhere etc etc etc.

I consider the age, suspected reasons, mobility and regular movement schedule.

If it's a true diarrhea blow out I'll call, the second one kiddo goes home but otherwise I try to be a bit more understanding.

I send home after the second one in a day (if they are diapered) or the first one (if in underwear) regardless of any of the reasons you posted above.

I'm not a doctor nor play one on TV, but I would call to have the child picked up. The child is at risk of dehydration with that much diarrhea. I had a child come with diarrhea & it turned out she had Rotavirus effecting all the other children. Parent later said the child had it all weekend prior to bring her. EVERYTHING had to be sanitized.
