The Kid With The Blank Stare!!

4 year old DCB.....everytime I must correct him he just gives me this blank stare, like he has no clue what I'm talking about! It drives me nuts! I have to reinforce my rules with him DAILY. It's like he totally forgets everything when he leaves everyday. He is also the same child who is constantly chewing on his fingers ALL DAY and getting spit everywhere! Eww I can't stand it anymore!!

With a kid like that I make sure they are looking directly at my face when I talk to them. Doesn't always work but sometimes it does.

Ooh, I hate that! I've got a two year old who always smiles like she thinks it's funny.

He may not be able to process what you are saying. You can try using very few words. Even though he's four, he may need the "toddler" redirections.

"No hit" Instead of "Holly doesn't like it when you hit, it makes us sad"

Or "Playdough ON the table". Tap on the table.

If he's not able to process what you are saying, you are just babbling, and he can't follow it.

The fingers in the mouth drives me CRAZY!! I have an almost four year old girl who ****s three fingers all the time. Makes me nuts. Guess who's sick more than anybody else? I just say "fingers" quietly, but, within ten minutes they are back in her mouth. She's super bright and responsible otherwise. I'm pretty sure I could leave the house and leave her in charge of the whole group. So, I can overlook the finger ****ing sometimes.

I have a two year old that used to **** on 8 fingers at once. Put one hand over the other and ****ed on all but thumbs. Totally grossed me out. She is the happiest, most well behaved little girl so she was easy to work with on this habit. At first I would tell her nicely "out of your mouth" and we would go wash her hands. I did this repeatedly for a few days and I haven't seen her do it since. I gave lots of praise as she washed her hands.
