I tell the kids that all the time.
"If you don't behave, we will have to lock you under the stairs like Harry Potter." complete with evil voice. They all giggle.

Cupboards under the stairs are very common in England (think Harry Potter!!), where I grew up.

My Grandmother used hers for china and such. My Grandfather made shelves and they filled it top to bottom with china/glass etc.

My own parents turned theirs into a small bathroom.

My father grew up on a farm and they had a fairly large under-the-stairs closet. During the war, it was their shelter. During raids, they would all huddle under there. They kept blankets, food, supplies etc.

Hopefully, you don't need an air raid shelter ::.

I would look on Pinterest for ideas. I am addicted to the darn site! I think there a lot of genius's out there!

Thank you everyone! The under stairs closet is right in between the two daycare rooms. There's about 5 feet from the wall to the closet door which makes an open doorway. The stairs are not actually in sight from the daycare portion. There's a garage attached to the daycare, so the stairs lead from the garage to the loft above the daycare. So what everyone sees from inside the daycare is what looks like a regular closet. We used to keep the cots in there, but then needed it for storage, but everything just gets thrown in there and lost since there's no shelves or anything. It's a rented space, so any painting or changing of the doors would require permission. I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem with an organized storage solution or a hide-out that didn't involve painting, though
