We had several of the soda bottle bombs set off by us a couple of years ago. SIL heard one go off in the middle of the night and went to investigate and saw two more that hadn't exploded. He called the PD. We ended up having several fire trucks, bomb squad, police, etc parked in our front yard for several hours.

As I recall, it was dry ice put into a soda bottle and capped.

I'd heard about something like this from fb and it is so frightening! I hope that little boy is okay... That is so horrible.
