Recurring Sties In 4 Year Old

Has anyone ever had any experience with this ?

Almost 4 yo DCB has has recurring styes in/on his eyes since he was 2/2.5. They will come and go every few months, and vary in severity. He has been prescribed antibiotics before, and they will help some - but mostly they just wind up going away on their own. Dr gave parents the option to drain it, but that involves putting him under, and they want to avoid that - especially since they go away on their own.

Right now he has two on the outside of his lower lid line, and one on the inside of the same eye.

We have no idea what is causing this, and I was hoping maybe one of you had an answer ?

all i know is that their caused by bacteria, make sure he washes hands frequently, 4yr olds cant seem to keep their hands off their face.
    warm compresses daily might help.
and doing the procedure is probably the best course of action since he gets them a lot.

Some styes can also be caused by a blocked tear duct or an allergy (due to overwatering and rubbing of the eye; even an allergic reaction to debris or an irretant in the eye such as cat hair, pollen, make-up, or dirt).

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stye:
"Styes are commonly caused by the blocking of an oil gland at the base of the eyelash. Although they are particularly common in infants, styes are experienced by people of all ages. Styes can be triggered by poor nutrition, sleep deprivation, lack of hygiene, lack of water, and rubbing of the eyes. Sharing of washcloths or face towels should be curtailed to avoid spreading the infection between individuals"

My son also gets sties but not as frequently as you mentioned. When he has one I use over the counter polysporin eye stuff.
To prevent them the eye doctor told us to use a q-tip and wipe the edge of the eye lid every morning with a solution of johnson's baby shampoo and water. (not supposed to sting the eye). We also have a friend that does this for himself (an adult).

My daughter got one when she was 2 that we ended up having to get surgically removed because it got to about 1/2 of a pea size and inflamed. We tried hot compresses and drops, but they were not successful. The surgeon said that unfortunately some kids get them a lot and there isnt much that can be done. He said at the first sign the hot as they can stand it compresses are the best way to get rid of them(several times per day). Thankfully she has not had that problem since then.
