Laminate. If you want wood looking, get wood laminate! We have hardwood. It looked beautiful when we first moved in. Now it looks horrible. I don't know if they just used too soft of a wood or what but everytime someone drops something (and hey, they are kids) it leaves a divet in the floor. Not deep but it is no longer smooth. My mom has wood laminate and it holds up to anything.
The top layer of laminate is what it so much more durable than hardwood. Get the best quality you can afford and put down a quality underlayment. If you start with a good foundation you'll have better results.
We are getting rid of ours too! I'm so happy, whew! There's an old thread on here, I'm sure Black Cat can link to it, but the overwhelming majority voted laminate! That was the thread that convinced me.
Now, my dilemma... hire someone to do it, or do it with DH. Has anyone installed their own? I'm not worried about our capability level... I'm worried about the time it would take. Hmm...

I think we are having ours done by someone else. Hopefully while I am closed for 4th of july week. It will be so hard to wait that long!
So.......where do you put all your stuff while the floors are installed?

When my master bedroom was done my gigantic bed (king) was placed behind the cubbies. :: It was really funny. The other items were placed upstairs.
When the upstairs was done, the furniture was moved into rooms that weren't being done.

It is super simple, as long as you are capable of cutting it yourself (I used my table saw, just make sure to turn it upside down so the saw blades won't nick the top of the laminate, and account for this loss, around 10% on top of your square footage)
My dh and I did our entire first floor (around 1,800sf) in a 3 day weekend, we went from room to room and moved everything into a room we weren't working on, finished that room and then put everything back. We installed new base molding the next weekend. I really wish I had just closed for a week and done it all at once because it was EXHAUSTING!
I love hardwood and Laminite is okay too (I really hate carpets). I think as far as resale hardwood is better because most people love hardwood and some think Laminate looks weird all through out the house (my ex-roommates hated that one of the houses we lived in had laminant flooring but I thought it was better than carpet. But also because you are doing daycare, you may worry more about your hardwoodfloors getting scratched up and Hardwood tends to be the most expensive option. There are a few things that can look similar to hardwood but are a little cheaper (and even greener) such as cork, vinyl, or bamboo flooring- though they my be more suseptable to wear and tear/ damage. Also it depends on what rooms you plan on redoing (if it for the whole house or just certain rooms) and the food traffic.
A quick look at all the pros and cons options and what rooms it is best for (bamboo is not on the list so maybe try to look it up):
There are lots of different affordable flooring options. Each flooring type has advantages and disadvantages, and a type that’s ideal for one room could be a terrible choice for another. Learn which choices are right for your flooring project here.
