    Medication

I am unsure about providers giving medications to dck. Is it ok as long as they sign a consent? Dcb was diagnosed with asthma which I have a form for but parent just text me if I felt comfortable giving him liquid med.

    Any advice????

    Thank you

What are your state requirements for giving meds? It should be in the minimum standards and there should be a form on your state website that the parents will need to fill out in order for you to administer any medication. Where I live, the parent must fill out something for each and every medication (including but not limited to sunscreen, lotion, etc.).

I, personally, do not give any meds beyond an EpiPen, asthma inhaler, or neb treatment. I just don't want to assume any more liability than absolutely necessary.

He will need a treatment for his asthma to be administered by me besides the inhaler. I do have a medication form for that.

How often does it need to be administered? If it is no more than 2x/day - I would make the parents do it before and after. If it is as needed, I would get all the training needed so that you are comfortable if the need arises. I'm a Neonatal RN, However, I try very hard not to be the one medicating dck. If a parent came specifically to my daycare because they needed a treatment midday, I would be willing to do that. But, anything else, besides emergency treatment, I would try to find a way to have the parents be the ones giving the medication. In the past 2 years, the only med I have needed to give, was a midday antibiotic for one child. There is a lot of liability that goes along with giving meds.

Also, require that the med be brought to you in the original container, with the doctors orders on the bottle and all accompanying information for you to look at - especially side effects to be on the lookout for and warnings, drug interactions.

DCP said it will need to be administered when needed by child depending how the day goes. Also it can take a week or weeks before he can stop it completely. So now I'm not sure if I want to do it.

Ok thank you for the advice

here is the consent form for the nebulizer. You will need written instructions from the doctor as well.

I always had a form that doctors had to fill out for medication, and the medication given had to have the prescription on it. I also had a form where parents had to sign off on what medications I had given that day.
