I have to agree that, yes, it could affect business. I see nothing wrong with it other people do. It's a matter of personal opinion.

I got my lip pierced when I was in high school and I was "jobbing out" (kind of like internship) at a local elementary school. Well, whe the principal saw it he LAYED INTO ME! He yelled at me and said that he would NEVER leave his child with someone with a lip piercing

Everyone's different. I'm just glad I don't have a boss to yell at me for these things now

Well I had to search the forum to find this thread but I knew there would be one...

I got a tattoo this past Sunday...
I have NO IDEA how to do those thumbnail pictures.. I wish someone could teach me... I'd post a pic or two.. but...

This is the email I sent out to my family.. primarily my mom and daughters...

I wasn't thrilled when Christi Nicole ( my oldest daughter.. about to turn 23) got her first tattoo.. or her second... or third.. or 4,5, or 6th...
And Charli (my younger daughter, 18) has 2 now also....
I always said NEVER ... not me.. no tattoo's for me.

      BUT...
The last few months.. I've changed my mind about lots of things in life....
      I just decided that hey...
      You only live once..
      and frankly...
that tummy/hysterectomy scar and stretch marks were not ever going to look any better..
      so what the Hell....

I am secure and confident in my decision...
It was for sure a very very personal choice to do it..
and... I am proud that I did..
I was careful to place it where it is only seen if I show someone...
My girlfriend was with me.. she got a cursive letter 'B' on her shoulder...
Personally.. I would not do that..
It will show every time she wears a racer back tank top...
I also am glad I decided against getting a foot tattoo..
I had considered the 'white ink' tattoo on my foot.. I have a friend that has one...
it barely shows..which is why I liked the idea...
but.. if you do a regular colored tattoo on your foot .. every time you wear sandals of any kind..
      every one sees it..
and.. what about when you dress up.. like for church.. or a formal thing like a wedding?
      and there is that tattoo...

      Any way...
Obviously it will be seen with a bikini... but... otherwise.. you'll only know I have it if I choose to show you...
      and that makes me happy...
I think it is positively beautiful... and it makes me feel pretty sexy ..
Mark (my dear wonderful husband) totally loves it...He actually worked with the tattoo artist to help design it...
and.. he is going back to same artist this next Sunday... for his..

We obviously didn't know this tattoo artist... before... but.. in the end..
He is a really cool guy.. doesn't drink.. ever... hates the taste of alcohol.. very smart... very very smart...and.. funny... we all had a blast for the 2 1/2 hours of my tattoo...
well.. except that I had to do allot of very deep breathing.. in.. and out.. in.. and out.. relax

I have my ears, nose and lip pierced but I rarely wear them and I have a black star on my lower back. It's kinda hard to find clothing that fits my body type so sometimes my tattoo does show but with parent's I have sat for they never said anything about it and at my old FCC job there were a few older kids that noticed but I would just play it off or ignore it and change the subject. Sometimes in the sun DCKs would notice my nose ring and ask what it is and I would say "it's just a sparkle". And once another DCK noticed the hole in my lip but he was up really close. I would like to get more tattoos/piercing but my fiancé is giving me enough grief lately about "looking professional" and wearing my favorite glow-in-the-dark skeleton hoodie around town (example below). BTW I rarely wear the hoodie zipped up all the way like that unless I am showing someone what it looks like.

I keep telling him 1) I am not even open yet (at least a year or 2 away); 2) I am not planning on opening a FCC in my current town; 3) I see kids walking around all the time in skeleton shirts. One time a DCB wore a skeleton shirt the same day I wore my hoodie, and the provider never said anything about. In fact, the DCB's parent's noticed at pick up time thought it was funny that we matched. Both of DCB's parents work as teachers for the private catholic high school across the street from the FCCH. I have also gotten many complements on it by not only people my own age but also older people as well.

It's a common thing in my area and all my day care parents have them. I have two only visible if I wear a bathing suit and I didn't disclose them. My tongue is pierced too but my parents don't realize it .. So is my belly button but they don't know that either ....

Now, let me say, that if we're the parent and went to interview a provider that had a lot that was visible.... Then I'd do my very best to step back and check out their program and consider ALL parts to it... That's just me though. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But I'll tell you this, my daughter went to one private provider in her life and she was absolutely terrible in the care department. I'd trade her ANY day for a tattooed, pierced awesome provider

I admire some tats as works of art, but for the most part I don't like them. I'm old school and (like Blackcat) I too grew up in an era when only "bad ass" people had tats. Right or wrong...it's how I look at them.

I have always wondered if many people think passed the initial idea of getting the tattoo. What looks "cool" on a 20 year old's body, may look downright stupid when she's 60, KWIM? I have known several people who deeply regret their tattoos when they get older.

At the same time, I have known people who have had a tattoo done for deeply personal reasons, not just a fashion statement.

Many of you are familiar with the reason I don't allow DCP's to hang out at my daycare. We once had a father who liked to hang out and he turned out to be registered child rapist. He had done time in another state, let out of prison because of overcrowding and his willingness to have "therapy" . He molested his own daughter and is now back in prison.

The child's mother has a beautiful tattoo of her daughter on her shoulder. She did it to remind herself of her commitment to her child and to show her daughter that she will always be her angel (the tat shows her daughter with angel wings). I completely understand how having it done was therapeutic for her.

On the other hand I have a friend at church who is in her mid 50's like me. She had a Winnie The Pooh tat put on her leg in her youth and now she feels like an idiot when she wears a skirt!!! It was so cutsie when she was a young thing....not so much now!

I was director at a church daycare center .... and got a tattoo done on my ankle, it wasnt very big (4 stars for my 4 children), was done as something that was very meaningful for me; and was perfect for that time in my life. I loved it then .... still do 8 years later. However ..... the pastor, leadership of the church was very angry with me for getting a tattoo and told me that. They made a written rule shortly after that no staff member could have a tattoo. I left shortly after that, for other reasons. I do realize that there are parameters for professionalism, but in this day and time its more common to see people with tattoos. Everything in moderation

This is something I'm a little worried about. I have a tattoo on my ankle of angel wings. It's pretty big for an ankle tattoo... it's maybe 3-4 inches tall. I'm worried that I'll be judged for having a tattoo that will be visible to children (because I have no intention of wearing long pants in the heat of summer ).

Thing is, this tattoo means so much to me. It's in honor of my nephew who died from SIDS 4 years ago. It was a very difficult time in my entire family's life and my sisters (one of them being his mom) and I all got the same angel wing tattoos in remembrance of him. Granted, they both got full back angel wings, but I'm too chicken for that!

Anyway, I know that parents aren't going to know how important my tattoo is to me... some of them may just immediately think it's trashy. I'm ok with that, but it does make me nervous. I don't know many people who enjoy being judged like that. KWIM?

I personally have nothing against tattoos, but I think that if you ask any businessman (like Donald Trump) they'd say tattoos aren't professional. I don't have any visible tattoos and don't plan to get any. I teach Saturday morning band in a parochial school and direct my church's handbell choir, and know that tattoos would be frowned upon there.

I personally do not have any tattoos or piercings (besides my ears), and I would never get any.

As for other people with tattoos/piercings, it all depends on the message the person is sending... as with all things about the way people presents themselves. If I don't like the message I'm getting, I wouldn't be likely to enroll my child in their care.

The people I know who are heavily tattooed all tend to be artists or people who break away from the norm a little bit--not in a rebellious way or a bad-ass way, but in a "I'm an original" kind of way. Their tattoos are often really beautiful or meaningful or both. These kind of tattoos are totally okay with me.

We can all think of other kinds of tattoos that probably aren't so positive. If I met someone covered in tattoos that were violent in nature, or dark (meaning creepy or disturbing) or sexually suggestive, then no... I wouldn't choose that person for childcare.

I think if you present yourself in a professional manner than it won't effect your business. If I were a new parent and during the interview you were dressed nice, showed pleasant mannerisms and showed love towards my children I wouldn't think twice of the tattoo. If you looked sloppy, let a curse word slip out and portrayed yourself as a "I don't give a $+%#" attitude then the tattoo is going to go on my list of reasons why I won't choose you, know what I mean? I do agree that you may have to work harder at trying to win some parents over, but that is for you to decide.

Hmmmm. In MD they are very common, I never even thought about what my parents think or may think about my tattoos. I have 8 tattoos and all but 2 are visible. They all have meaning. I plan on getting 2 more this summer...I have no plans of covering up on purpose to please anyone. If you pre-judge me because I have tattoos then that makes you ignorant not me. Please don't let anyone dictate how you live your life, or run your business. Be you and express yourself accordingly!!! happyface

I'm with Black Cat... in fact I think we are sisters separated at birth because we have so many of the same beliefs ::::

I was at a restaurant a few months back and the waitress had some very rude and disgusting drug/Satan tattoos on her arms, hands and fingers...
It scared my daughter and we just didn't eat there and left.

I know in my mind having tattoos does not make you dirty, but in the food industry or personal care industry..I don't think they should be on the hands arms or fingers!

                            Just my opinion
