How Many Times Do You Have To Tell Them???

Ok, it's like 15 degrees outside. Dcm brings 4 yo with a tiny short sleeved t shirt on. I've suggested to her repeatedly that he NEEDS to wear long sleeves as it's always a little drafty in my home...even though I keep my temp set at 73.

At least one day per week she sends him in a t shirt. I usually put a long sleeved shirt on him from my foster care stash and ALWAYS forget to take it off him when he leaves. So now, they have a collection of my shirts.

Today, dcb arrives again in a tiny t shirt. I'm tired of telling mom and dcb the same thing...were long sleeves when it's cold out. I bet when it's 90 he will be dressed in long sleeves...

Sometimes "suggesting" does NOT work. I would INSIST they bring a long sleeved shirt/sweater to leave at daycare.

Don't allow the child to stay if parent arrives without the REQUIRED items.

As far as the borrowed clothing items go, I do one of two things; either write PROPERTY OF *** CHILD CARE across the front of each item so parents are continually reminded the clothing belongs to you or charge a "lending fee".

My lending fee is $5 and $2 for each additional day. Once the parent returns the item, I return the fee. If they keep the item longer than 5 days/1 business week, the item is theirs to keep.

    Works EVERY time.

I don't offer spare clothing to children. If a parent does not bring required supplies then they are not accepted into care for the day (no reimbursements either). I would tell the parents a sweater needs to be left at daycare by tomorrow morning. They don't show up with one? They don't get childcare until they do!

I just don't get it. He has a sa sister also and I insisted she leaves a sweater here right by the door. It works out well for her because it's very heavy and her coat won't fit over it so there's no forgetting to take it off at the end of the day.

I would have gladly kept one by the door for him as well...even if it was one I supplied, but every time I put something on him, *I* forget at the end of the day to remove it.

I just wish these parents would learn how to dress their kids so I didn't have to monitor them. I think next time I'm going to just tell her she needs to go back home and get him something warmer.

          Sounds like the perfect solution!

Oh and I have 2 here that will wear spaghetti strapped shirts and short skirts when it's 40 out and then long sleeves and pants when it's 100. Luckily, they DO have items in their cubby that I do not let leave here.

Does he complain about being cold, or are you just worried?

All 4 of my own kids hate, hate, hate long sleeves. They would rather freeze than wear them. Of course, when it's really cold outside, I would insist.

I think that at 4, he can learn some consequences. If he complains about being cold, I would kindly say "Oh, I am sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, I don't have any more long sleeved shirts for you. Please remember to wear one until the weather is better".

It's just a little discomfort-not health or life threatening!

No...he doesn't complain about being cold a lot, but sometimes. And I haven't had this problem with this particular child but others when they wear short sleeves and it's so cold I've noticed that even if they don't complain about being cold, they constantly have a runny nose that day.

I think I'm just going to worry less about it and let it become their problem. This child's mom just had pneumonia earlier this week so maybe I'm just a worry wart and don't want him getting sick too

You don't get sick by being cold. You get sick by being exposed to illness. 90% of people believe otherwise. ::
