    Room Redo! Opinions/Inspiration Please!

Getting ready to redo one more room...I decided that having one room dedicated to napping is a waste of valuable space when napping is such a limited duration event. So, after much thought and pondering, I decided to turn the room into a Big Kid Playroom, where kids 3ish and older (basically, once they reach the age of "able to play without making everyone else furious") can play and build and read without toddlers and infants getting into their space. To do this though, it needs some serious changes to happen:

one view of my naproom as it is. well mostly. That wicker shelf is already gone, the cots are currently put away, I have a rug on the floor, and I took that wall light off the wall yesterday but that's not important. The other couple photos are in thisalbum

That paneling. UGH. Good grief it's hideous. And I've thought so since we moved in 3+years ago but I didn't do anything about it because we were just using it for napping.

So. I'm way too lazy to try removing the paneling. I'm just going to paint over it. Well...prime over it a couple times, *then* paint. But anyway....I can't decide what to paint...blue all the way down (like the wall above), blue partway down and then green ("grass"), green the whole bottom half of the walls....or something else?

Just for comparison's sake, I'll tell you the rest of my plans: I'm replacing the ceiling fan (hopefully with a white one), putting in carpet tile (something lightish and neutral), and you can't quite see the closet in the corner but it's 48inches wide with bifold doors. I'm going to convert the doors into swinging ones instead of folding ones and then mount smooth boards painted with chalkboard paint on them. The doors will be painted white, probably (I just can't stand the dark brown). The room gets almost NO natural light due to a covered porch being on the other side of that window.

    Thoughts? Opinions?

What about painting the paneling white and then blue on the top? The white might add light to the room.

my vote is none of the above...paint the paneling white like the doors on the closet.

Huh, I never considered white. Probably because I'm always trying to put color on the walls 'cause I hate white walls, myself...okay, I'll add another option...

I HATE white also.....it is just so bare and appears "hospital-like". Heck, I think most hospitals are shying away from white and going with color in muted tones.

What I would do is paint the top part blue like it is (maybe add a cloud or two) and paint the bottom a beige color like sand. Maybe even use some texture like that textured wall paper made to cover paneling. It's paintable too so.....

I think making it look "beachy" is refreshing and inviting....I mean who doesn't want to go sit on the beach in the sunshine?

You could even add mobiles of clouds or a sunshine....or get one of those palm leaves from Ikea to put in the corner like a palm tree. Or paint any of those things on the walls. You could also do a combination of different shades of beige so it looked like sand dunes, maybe even using parts of the blue area as water with waves.....

Here is the palm leaf I mentioned:

Another vote for white. I have the sky blue and hills on the top 2/3 of my walls and then white on the bottom. I hang all of the kids art work and some of my posters on the lower half and they really stand out much better against the white than they would against a color. It also helps to brighten the room.

paint the paneling either white/eggshell or very light beige (I prefer white because it looks clean and crisp) if you can, change the door to white (its about 30 dollars for a new one at lowes) add doors to the closet and paint them white.

add a white ceiling fan (walmart has them the cheapest)

get rid of the clouds and paint the top a light color because you said the room is dark. I would do a green (mine is called frosted shadow by valspar) or a yellow, blue (look at the disney glidden collection at walmart samples)

I would then put darker furniture in it to offset the colors and add a dark blind (so you can still block the light out) and add a valance (my blind came from menards)

I was thinking white as well. It's actually very trendy right now to have white paneling. Also, it is probably not an easy paint job. And if you don't like the outcome of the colored paint on the panelling it will be more difficult to change than going from white to a color. kwim?

Ooo I'm kinda digging Blackcat's beachy idea...and those ikea palm fronds. I needed to go to ikea for those Poang chairs anyway.

I'm not looking to paint over the blue w/ clouds that's already there. My sister did the clouds and I love them. I'm just looking to making the ugly brown paneling go away. and the ugly brown (annoying) bifold doors.

I like the idea of also painting the door to the room. I might mount a flannel board on there....that would be fun.

I would go with a creamy light beige on top and leave the paneling brown. I totally go for earth tones/neutrals and then use decor and children's artwork, as well as pretty aesthetic displays to add pops of color here and there. I think adding color to the walls limits options for "accessorizing"
