How to Turn Someone Down

So I have one opening and I've interviewed 2 people for it so far. One is a baby (3 months) and one is a 3 1/2 yo not potty trained. I know the mom of the 3 yo from high school but I don't want to take her 3 yo. I think a baby would be a better fit because the age group I have now is 2 and under and he would have no one his age play with. Plus she is pregnant and due in May and wold really like them to go to the same place. I told her I can't guarentee a spot that far out. I don't even have a spot for the baby now. Anyway, I feel bad but I know I have to do what is best for my business. So, how would you word an email telling her I chose someone else? Or would you call?

I would call and tell her that you feel he would not do well in your daycare because he wouldn't have any other friends his age to play with. I believe that is a simple-enough reason. She should really be looking for a daycare with kids his age anyway.

Infant always trumps older child anyday of the week!

Chances are, you can have this child for a much longer duration than a child that could possibly go off to preschool in the fall.

It's a no brainer.

I would just tell her you selected a family that is a better fit for your program.
