    Orientation

For those of you that have gone to the Licensing Orientation ... what can I expect? Is it at least more than sitting on my butt from 9-3 listening to the rules and regulations being read to me? (Please say yes!).

Ours ended about an hour early, and there were snacks! happyface

The best part about it was that they had an actual inspector there teaching half of the class. The inspector went over the kinds of things that fail most people during an inspection, some sort of random. Like having the EXACT right fire extinguisher, having a tupperware container in the fridge marked "medicine" (even if it's empty) and having colored tape or decals on the sliding glass door.

I'm sure all states vary, but it was nice to get the first hand perspective of an inspection.

Everything can be found in writing in the licensing info. So if you poured over that information no, you probably won't learn anything new. But it's free and you get out of the house!

Oh, they went over ways the county helps with marketing. How to get on lists, etc. That was kind of cool.

I would take questions with you so you can make sure you get the right answers. I don't know what Michigan does, but in Texas, the class is optional for homes. Texas now has an online 'home orientation.' I think the class is way more informative and would always encourage that. Like just_peachy said, you get the inside knowledge from the Licensing inspector on things that are commonly cited. I don't think any class just reads the rules. That would be boring. They usually have exercises to practice your knowledge/understanding of the rules.

CA has an online orientation now too. I kinda wonder what it's all about and whether they give you a test of some sort to make sure you're not sitting there watching TV and just randomly clicking the "next" button on the slides or video or whatever it is ::.

In the TX one they ask questions throughout. They aren't hard if you know anything about general regulations. At the end of the TX one, you can print a certificate. Maybe CA is the same?

Yes, it is sitting there while they go through a powerpoint presentation about the licensing rules and go through examples & exercises to make sure everyone understands them. It's not horrible. It is taught by a licensing consultant who is able to answer your questions. We didn't get any snacks
