What "Ummm, Well" Means?

I am potty training my 2.5 yr old DCK and I talked to mom before starting and agreed that what was going to be done here had to be done at home as well, yup... Started Monday, both Monday and Tuesday asked mom at pickup "How did it go last night @ home?" Answer " Well... um... you know.." yup, I definitely know what that means. Today the answer she gave me was that they are doing it a little bit different at home, just a bit different. But know what? A bit different was not the agreement. This parents, as soon as they say "umm" i already know.

I have learnt over the years when a child is in day care for 9 hour days , that the parents or often parent ( single ) come home frome work, pick up children, get home , do supper, baths, laundry, bed time ex....are too tiered to put up the "fight" or effort , or have only a couple or few hours of awake time with their child or children and will often cave at following through.
In a 9 hour day it is easier for me to be constant and I have basicaly a longer day to help with it
In my interviews I will often say that it is one of my jobs to help with potty training and weaning of bottle, and that I understand the short nights with their children, and that it is easier for me to not Cave ...they love that ....

I understand why you would approach it that way and its certainly your choice. The main reason why my approach is more like the OP (parents initiate and get things started) is because most parents want their child trained too early. I had one parent of a special needs child want to start training before her child was even walking well.....this child certainly could not step up on a stool, handling clothing, or wash without help. the best way for parents to see if their child is truly ready or not is to require them to begin the process and maintain consistency before i join in the effort. even just a weekend will often show parents what their kid can and cannot do and then they will see what is and is not a fair expectation at daycare. if their child does not go one time in a week of training, clearly it is not fair to then send them in underwear to daycare. anyway, i wish parents were just more informed and honest about their child capabilities and then i wouldnt have to police them, set up policies for every milestone or hear "ummmmm....well...." after they were asked how potty training was going. clearly it is not going well OP or they havent even tried at all.

I am willing to help because I am training my own child, and thought ( might be wrong) that doing the 3 of them ( mine plus others ) @ same time would be easier in the long run. With my child I have been very consistent and I've seen good progress in a couple of days. I'm using the training pants method, skipping pull-ups. I think is a good Idea, I've trained other kids before with pull-ups and it has been a very long training period because of 2 things, 1- Pull-ups make them feel dry enough to be comfortable with it and 2- When they had pull-ups I would put the timer but if i was busy doing something I would say "Well, they can wait a little bit more while a finish this or that" ( no mess involved ). With training pants I have to run when the timer beeps because I don't want any messes around. I really don't mind helping the parents with the training, I just need consistency from their part for things to be able to work. After this experience I think I will add a training pant only policy, this for children that are already trained but still have accidents here and there, those training pants are really good.
