Teaching Them to Tie Their Shoes

How in the world do you do it. My ds is 5 and doesn't know how and I am struggling trying to figure out a way to teach him. Any tips or tricks?

Tried many things with little success ... then I found this book in a garage sale and it was the best tool ever with 100% success in the first day: "Red lace, yellow lace: learn to tie your shoe" children's book with practice board. By Mark Casey. You can find it in Amazon.

I start with telling them to hold both strings straight up to for the number "eleven". The to cross them to form and "X" and then put one "under the bridge". Tighten, create two bunny rabbit ears and put one "under the bridge". Tighten.

This works for me. Hope it works for you.

They have boards with laces were you can teach them how to tie their shoes. Sometimes the flat surface helps them when they are learning. You can also make your own board by getting a thick cardboard and tracing the child's foot/ or shoe and then gettting some laces (you can get them at the $1 store) making holes for the laces and lacing the holes just like the shoes and leaving enough lace for them to practice.

When I worked at a daycare one of my friends told me that I had she always told me I tied the kids shoes wrong because I never really do the initial cross to flatten the shoe tongue. I just take the bunny ears and tie them (sometimes twice) but I like doing it this way because it is fast and it stays but doesn't get caught up in knots like the other way does.

              Make a teepee
              Climb inside
Pull it tight so we can hide
              Over the mountain
              And around we go
              Here's my arrow
              Here's my BOW!

I don't do bunny ears. I recently heard someone tell me about a teenager still doing bunny ears.

first, they may not be ready. tying shoes is a hard skill.
nothing works better than a kid who has a pair of tie shoes on. We tried the books, the wooden shoes, but the easiest was the one that was on their feet.

make sure that they can tie the knot first, go over and over it, make a hundred knots till they have it down. teach them to pull it tight. I know it sounds simple but I have girl guides who couldn't even do this.

the bunny ears is the easiest. just practise making bunny ears. If you find that they are struggling then they may not be ready. (I know kids in grade 4 who can't tie their shoes)

then show them how to make an X with the bunny ears, just keep practising the same skills over and over, till they can do it

last show them how to tuck the bunny ear thru the opening, push the bunny ear towards them and pull.

it takes time, some kids catch on really quick others it takes a while.

My dcm just showed me a method she found online. It looked really complicated, but after a minute of getting past ingrained methods, it made sense. She's out sick today, but when she comes back, I'll ask where she found it. In the meantime, I'll look at her pinterest board.

I agree it is difficult and takes time, but there is no reason a 4th grader shouldn't be able to tie their own shoes unless there is a disorder/disability. It sounds more like laziness or frustration with the concept.

Anywho, I also teach the bunny ears. I buy the boards that are only $1 at Dollar Tree. Once they learn how to create and tie the bunny ears tightly I move on to the actual shoe. Don't worry if he doesn't get it before Kindy; if you keep working with him, he'll catch on quickly enough. Just stay on it! I know in our schools many of the K's have a lot of pressure with having to know how to cut with scissors, print their name, recognize quantities and know the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. This one little task will not make or break him

Here....3's work on knots until they are ready to learn to tie. I have all my 4's tying their own shoes.

One good method to use (at first) is to use a jump rope and the kids tie their legs together. The jump rope makes it so much easier for the kids to SEE what they are doing.

The wooden shoe works great......one boy learned how just this morning with that shoe. Every kid is different.

Also....making the lace a different color on each side helps a lot. When they go through the hole to grap onto the lace...they can see what color they need to get.

When the go "around" with the one lace....I make sure they go towards their body because they can see the hole better.

Wish I could post one of my videos here so it would make more sense. Most kids have learned in one day.
