    Sick Kid-Update

    Ok here's the update...... Dcb was picked up early by dad to take to the doctor. After I send mom a text stating dcg was coughing, being miserable etc she called the doctor. He went in and was diagnosed with 2 bad ear infections, he was given antibiotics. The questions is.... Should I accept the child tomorrow? Child has a bad cough and very fuzzy.

        Thanks, I'm already at the point to tell her that I'm willing to credit her back on sick days she doesn't bring him in. Do you think that's fair? She always complains when she has to pay a back-up babysitter when she has already paid me. Not sure what to do? :confused:

          What is in your contract? If they have sick days, use a credit. If not, that's their choice to take off work or pay a babysitter. It's not your fault they are sick.

            Parents don't have sick days, they are entitled to a 1 week vacation per year at half rate only.

              Then I wouldn't feel bad- it's part of being a parent, knowing that you will most likely have to use your sick days at work to take care of your sick kid! You are doing your job, and they are doing theirs!

                I wouldn't change the $ if it's already in your contract...sick kids are part of being a parent. If you do "special" for this parent they will want "special" every time. I think it's just asking for trouble KWIM?

                  ABSOLUTELY. When they complain I put on a sympathetic face and say, "Balancing parenthood and work is hard, I understand." I certainly don't give them discounts or let them change my policies.

                    I would not take the child the next day. He is sick, and needs to be at home resting.

                    Not your kid, not your problem. It is a hard attitude to have, but it is the truth. We all have to make adjustments when our children are sick. This parent should not be the exception!

                      I require children to remain home for the first 24 hours they are on an antibiotic.

                      As far as the crediting back money for sick days, I wouldn't do that if I were you. As others have said, having to miss work or deal with a sick child is all part of parenting. During my interview process, I stress to parents how important having a back up plan for sick day is.

                      I understand it is difficult to have to miss work but the responsibility shouldn't always fall onto the child care provider. It should be part of the parents plan.

                      They MUST have back up or miss work. I play NO ROLE in that issue.

                      I think this relationship has probably deteriorated to the point of no return. Once a parent starts rolling their eyes at you, they are telling you they have ZERO respect for you. I cannot work with someone like that. I think it would be best to term if you can financially afford it.

                        Thanks for all the great responses..... I finally told her that I was willing to give her credit for up to two days when child is sick. I'm being to lenient I know but I didn't have any other way out. Or should I say "I don't have the guts to say anything" she already pays a very low price but oh well it's said.

                          I need to depend upon my weekly income so no matter what the client pays. If I need more then two weeks vacation or three sick days a year then I don't charge for those days but other then that they pay. I too stress at interviews that they need to be responsible for back up care in the case it is needed. I am loyal as far as being here on my end of things, I need to be respected on the clients end of things.

                            you could possibly drain yourself if you keep this up. You will resent it and feel under appreciated. We all have to learn and I learned the hard way as most of us have. You need to find the guts or you will be walked on. I suggest clear rule,policy,handbook and contract. Nice and special don't get you far in this business until you learn who you can offer these services to and be appreciated, respected etc.... Best-
