    In the paper last night we had our sale ads come out. Here are the fruit "sales", and if this is the sale price I would hate to see the regular price.

    Stawberries=$2.99 for 1 lb. tub
    Apples=$1.69/$2.49 a lb. I have always found it only takes 1 or 2 apples to make a pound

    Another store:

    Grapes=$3.99 lb.
    Grapefruit= $.69 each
    Apples=$1.29 lb.
    Mandarin Tangerines= 5lb $7.99
    Pears=$1.49 lb
    Mangos= 2 for $3
    Each day is a fresh start

      Yes fruit and veggies are expensive, but so is junk food (3 dollars for a bag of chips or 8 dollars for a case of coke) but usually its convience overules cooking.

      I just spent 10 dollars on a bag of fresh green beans because my own children are on some crazy green bean kick, but I know alot of parents would never pay that.
      How long will that bag last you?

        it gives me enough to do 2 cooking things. So half a bag per meal, and i'm feeding 6 of us (4 kids)

        this all started because we went to a chinese restaurant who had steamed beans and my kids went crazy, so I went and bought a steamer (the one that fits inside a pot) and we eat beans twice a week. I make them with french onion stuff (thats their favorite)--I steam the beans and then throw some evoo and the french onion stuff and its good to go (no cream of mushroom soup) or I make it with garlic and onions, or with pepper flakes.

          I don't like fruit, it is usually too sweet for me. I LOVE vegetables, however. I still eat fruit, but I usually don't want to. I do like fresh blueberries and raspberries as well as an occasional banana.

            If you have an Aldi near you, I HIGHLY recommend them for their produce (they even sell super cheap organic products now) I ALWAYS buy my 'clean 15' there. In fact, I have started buying my boxed items there as well. (Raisins, TP, paper towels, I even tried and liked their .99 baby wipes!)

            Last week they had 3 packs of kiwi for .99, and 3 packs of mango for .99. Seriously! They also have a double your money back guarantee. I have returned tomatoes to them, got a different package of tomatoes AND my money back with a huge apology from the manager.

              I wish we had something like that!

              Our stores here:

              Safeway
              Albertsons
              Fred Meyer
              Wal-Mart

              We do have:

              A grocery outlet
              Then another store that is just local for the state

                  It's healthy, it's cheap, it's easy to eat and it comes in its own biodegradable packaging. It's the perfect toddler snack but most people don't even think about it. I don't understand.......

                      That's about regular for sale prices around here. I don't buy apples by the pound...I only buy them by the bag so it's cheaper.

                        I only purchase fresh (not frozen or canned) fruit and vegetables. If I do serve applesauce or frozen fruit, it was at one time purchased fresh and I made it into applesauce or frozen fruit . I shop at Wal-Mart (price matching), Sprouts (a farmer's market store), Fresh and Easy (a small European grocery store that expanded state-wide) and Costco. It's not exactly cheap because it really adds up due to quantity but I do get good deals on all of it. I pride in that we get a huge variety of fruits and vegetables because I buy whatever is in season. Throughout the year, we eat melons, pineapple, mangoes, kiwi, grapes, ****tail grapes, figs, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, multiple kinds of apples and pears, cherries, oranges, grapefruit, etc.

                          That's really high in comparison to what produce prices are where I am at. This week's sale ad had these specials.
                          Strawberries: 4 lbs./$5
                          Grapes: $1.68/lb.
                          Fuji apples and tangerines: 88ยข/lb

                          But of course, I am in an agricultural part of the state, and can find a fruit stand at just about every intersection and people are literally giving fruit away in their front yards. I receive a bag of produce from a different person every week only because of surpluses in someone's yard. Yet, I too see grocery carts full of sodas and boxes of processed food pushed around by obviously unhealthy families. So some may use prices as an excuse, but it still comes down to priorities.

                            I know I can easily go through $10.00 a day of fruit and veggies if not more. In the summer it is easily that with all the fresh stuff I buy but not far behind even in the winter for fresh and canned.

                            Thats one reason I don't do COSTCO, is because I can't afford their prices for stuff.
