    Mom brought sick child today

WHY can parents not see when their child is ill???

I have a 2 yo who is sick 90% of the time...I mean runny nose, coughing etc.
Wednesday he came and coughed non stop all day long and was running a temp by the end of the day. Yesterday he stayed home but when I talked to mom last night she said he was fine.

This morning she brings him...along with his tylenol she can't get him to take, and quickly leaves. Within minutes I notice he had very quick, labored breathing. He was sitting in the floor huffing.

I contacted mom to have him picked up and said if he was my child I'd be taking him to ER. Dad gets here and said every time they've taken him in the past they told them there was nothing wrong with him.

I'm sorry, but when a 2 yo is coughing non stop, has a temp and severe labored breathing...it could be serious. Why take that chance!!!! Not to mention possibly exposing everyone else to whatever he has. So, dad's taking him home...NOT to doctor, not to ER.

hmmmm severe cold outside????? if it keeps happening when the child is sick and goes in the cold I would suspect asthma. To diagnose the dr needs to see when it is happening.
    It:: will wait

Oooooh....I have one of those too!

My DKB has been sick on and off since September. He's brought all kinds of goodies into the daycare, including strep, which was my personal fav since we all got it! He's sick again now and last night I made clear that he was too ill to be brought if this continued into today, runny nose, cough and just tired. Anyway, he's here today. DCM claimed he was better, no runny nose (but she put cream under it since it was raw!?) and no cough, only when drinking milk and slept really well last night...ummm ok.sure. but who am I to argue since he was just being dropped off. Sure enough, two minutes after she leaves the runny nose, cough etc. start up. She claims she is still thinking he isn't ill that it's just from his shots he got on Monday this week...really???? Are parents thinking we are that dumb!? Anyway, sorry to add in my own rant, I'm thinking I need to make my contract alot tighter or simply explain to these parents that this can't continue to happen since it's making everyone else sick.

Sorry you are going through this, we all end up with parents sooner or later that simply don't care when their child is ill and send them regardless. These parents also seem to avoid taking him to a doc until there is something so obviously wrong...like a fever of 103 etc. it's too bad...sometimes I wonder...

I think he may possibly have asthma, but he's running a temp also so I think it's more than just that. And he's been having a runny nose. He just doesn't look well.
At any rate, if I was his parent's I'd be getting to the bottom of it and finding out if he does have asthma so I could be prepared for flare ups. And if it's not just asthma, I certainly wouldn't just brush it off.
They never dress him for the weather...bring him over in a short sleeved t-shirt in 20 degree weather. The other day it was about 50 in the morning but the temps were expected to drop drastically by the end of the day and he only wore a sweat shirt outside.
Oh...and the other thing is that he NEVER eats any food. They only give him milk and that is all he wants here. I've held off giving him milk until he eats his meal, but that hasn't done any good either, he still won't eat. Even sweets, he eats very little of.
He drinks so much mild that his bowel movements are only yellow...research I've done says that indicates anemia and that too much cow's milk will deplete the body of iron. So, I'm thinking he has a very low immune system as he's been sick about 90% of the time..****nny nose, fevers etc.

None of that sounds good at all. Poor kid. I'd certainly send home for the fever even if there wasn't too much else, but it sounds like he is struggling to get through this cold.

It bothers me that there appear to be many parents out there that are just clueless when it comes to their childrens health. If it were me, I'd be into the Dr. and if it turns out nothing, great, I still won't feel like I've wasted my time at all, because its important to me to know my kids are a-ok and it's just a cold etc! I'm never bothered by over checking my children when they are ill and I can't figure out what the deeper issues are i.e. ear infection, strep, chest infections etc. and I can't figure out why some parents are!?

It sounds like this little guys health is being severely neglected.

If I were you, I would exclude him until he has seen a doctor and the parents can supply you with a note or letter from the doctor addressing the issues you have noted about him.

Write them out and give them to the parents to give to the doctor. Do NOT allow him to be re-admitted without the doctor's note.

If they refuse to do it, you need to report these parents as this would be considered neglect of a child.

            Poor little guy

I agree with BC. write out the issues you are seeing and insist that the doctor signs off that he has read your concerns. insist that parents put a plan in place regarding the eating and illness. if they cannot do the simplest of tasks to get their son in better health, it is better for you to term now than to continue having them bring in illness or worse, have this boy fall dangerously ill on your watch.

Okay I get that some kids need certain medications for ailments and such but really unless they are prescribed by a Dr. they really aren't necessary. IMO if a child needs OTC medicine then the child should stay home and rest.

As yourself this ... if there is "nothing wrong with him" as the DCD claims the Dr says when he takes him to get looked at then why does need medicine? I'm guessing that the medicine is either a pain reliever or a fever reducer or both) and if he needs that then he has a) pain and/or b) a fever which means he shouldn't be at daycare.

I bet if you added a no OTC medication to your policies you can reduce the number of times that DCP's take their kids to DC ill. If you also add an anti "dope-and-drop" policy and add the words "are terms for immediate termination" to it you can reduce that rate by even more. Actually enforce it on the next DCP that tries it and or at least draw up a termination letter and a probation letter and have them choose either the term letter or to follow ALL policies to a T and I bet they won't try it again. You don't even have to be mean about it, just firm. Exposing the other kids to illnesses (to me) is a show of disregard to your business and the well-being of the other kids
