    super whiny kids

I am reaching my limit with one kid - they are an only child and when they don't get their way its a nightmare. Normally I just deal and make the best or it and set limits etc. But with cold season and and them not feeling great lately all they do is scream And cry. I have talked to the parent with little response other than they aren't like that at home? Which either means the parent is full of it or the kid has no rules at home. Either way the kid is making me bAtty! Ugh!!

Have you tried giving him NO attention for the behavior? I have a dcb that after a weekend with dcm (divorced parents) is insanely whiny and starts the whining the second he is told to do something (even sit at the table after telling me he is hungry will set him off). He gets redirected to the cry corner, and I tell him that he is hurting our ears and he can come out when he stops crying. Monday is the worst, but by Wednesday we are back on track. He will also put himself there now. ::

I do ignore and redirect as needed with little change - if I redirect they actually get louder.

I am assuming that if he doesn't behave like that at home, he always gets his way. OR he does behave that way, and they give in.

Have you tried doing something VERY fun and allowing him to join only when he has calmed down?

Hate to say it, sounds like the parents give in and it will be next to impossible with some kids to change the behavior. I have noticed with kids that are naturally louder they tend to do that more since the parents can't stand to hear them so they give in. Starts down a bad path. If there is no change I have gotten rid of kids like that. One loud kid can mess it up for everyone. It is not fair to the other kids or you to hear this constant loud noise all the time when they are sitting there behaving. Plus I have seen it set off the other kids and they all start crying, one bad apple can ruin the calm dynamic of the whole group. Start looking for the replacement.

Home environment and child care environment is like comparing summer to winter.

I NEVER allow parents to use that theory/concept. Of course, they aren't like that at home. Do you feel as comfortable in your own home as you do in Target?

If I were in your shoes, I would let the parent know that if he cannot participate in your daily acitivities and routine without screaming or whining all day, then he isn't well enough to be in attendance.

              Call for pick up.

I don't care if he is an only child or one of 20. Behavior expectations are the same for all children in care (of course the expectations line up with develoment and age of child).

I don't do whiny. If he is feeling under the weather, he goes home. If he is whining to get his way, then he will learn fast that behavior like that garners no reinforcement or attention from me. Straight to the feeling corner EVERY.SINGLE.TIME he whines until he figures out how to not use it as a means to get his way.

              Rinse and repeat
