Definition of 'School Age'

I am confused by the definition of 'school age' pertaining to daycare in my state.

Here is the definition: "School age" means a child who is at least of sufficient age to have attended the first day of kindergarten, or is eligible to enter kindergarten within the next four months, but is younger than 11 years of age.

So, do you think this means when they turn 5 years old, they are considered to be school age even though they are not yet enrolled in Kindergarten? What does the 4 month thing mean?

I am getting inquiries for my childcare in which I need to classify a child tht will be turning 5 in April. I was assuming she will be considered 'school age' at that time. Any thoughts?

I don't think she's considered school age until May even though her birthday is in April. That would be 4 months prior to the start of the school year.

In my state that 5 yo would NOT be considered school aged until the day after the last day of school AND were enrolled to start K in the Fall. I would check with licensing and see what they say.
In my state supervision for children considered "school aged" is significantly less than for younger kids - mainly they can play outdoors without me - so I would want to make sure that I had everyone classified correctly.

Our state definitions are similar to yours. A child turning 5 in April would be eligible for school entrance in the fall so as of May 1, you may count her as a school age child.

Last year on May 1st I had these children:

DCG - turned 5 in March - eligible for Kindy in fall so she was considered SA
DCB - didn't turn 5 until Agust - still eligible for Kindy in fall so was SA
DCG - would turn 5 on in mid September - NOT eligible for Kindy so was NOT SA until following May.
