    Child Not Looking Straight Ahead

Have you guys ever had a child that looks at things out of the corners of their eyes? I just started a new dck and he does this almost all the time. I thought maybe one of you would have seen this and might have some insight since you have seen so many kids in your career!

our #1 ds does. he has nystagnus. the eyes kinda bounce by looking out the side he could focus better. so he looks like he is not paying attention.
Scared me to death when I was teaching him to drive LOL

Have you asked the parents about it? If they've noticed it or looked into it before?

If they've never investigated it or it's something new I'd strongly urge them to have him checked by an ophthalmologist (read - not an optometrist - one is equivalent to a nurse, the other an actual eye doctor).

I managed an eye health clinic pre-kids. I will never forget, parents brought their child in because they were curious why his eyes started deviating right. Upon examination the ophthalmologist insisted they take the child directly to a neurologist. Parents called back about three weeks later to thank the doctor, HE HAD A BRAIN TUMOR. It was incredibly aggressive but treatable.

The parents were told if they had waited much longer it could have easily gotten to the point where it would have been untreatable. The time saved with a prompt diagnosis bought the kid a chance. Doc came out after having the conversation just bawling (an old old guy, the sight was so moving I'll never forget it as long as I live). I called corporate and he received a commendation for his diligence. I am unsure what became of the child but I do think of him from time to time.......I can't imagine living that as a parent, much less the boy at his age (he was maybe 4?).

Absolutely it could be a completely benign condition, but the eyes can also be a window to many other parts of the body, especially when you're talking about something like focus.

I have an online friend who's son does this and he has diagnosed developmental delays that he's getting early intervention for. Either way this needs to be checked out.

Here is her blog that has info on his side eyes:

I think they are seeing drs about this. It was mentioned in interview as a possible astigmatism. I was just wondering if this is at all commom. The child is old enough to talk so I think they'll get to the bottom of this soon.

I myself, am legally blind in my right eye so, I know first hand that if this is affecting the child's vision it is not the end of the world. I can do anything anyone else can with only one eye! I can see shadows and color but, to make something out it has to be like 4 inches from my eye! And that's with my glasses! It's all I have ever known and even though my depth perception stinks and I often bump into things or bump my head putting the kids in the car, I wouldn't change it now if they could. Being able to see out of two eyes would really throw me out of whack!::

Astigmatism would not cause deviation in vision like that.

It causes vision to be blurry, but looking out the corners of his eyes wouldn't make any impact on a condition like that.

If that's what they mentioned during interview I *highly* suspect they haven't consulted any kind of doctor about it at all. Even the child's pediatrician would know full well that wouldn't be a symptom.

I have astigmatism in both eyes and that is not a symptom. However, all you an do as a caregiver would be to offer advice. It's up to the parents to follow through. But from what you've described in my opinion this is not in the normal scope of odd kid behavior.

Hate to be negative but parents can and will lie all the time about getting things checked out. Astigmatism would not cause that. From experience any sort of eye deviation whether
                  - Child not focusing and looking when you point at something (after 12m) even for a second.
                  - Child at any time has an eye that suddenly one goes off in a different direction that the other(go to the doc immediately.)
                  - Child doesn't focus on things at all spaced out all the time. Recommend ECI full work up if part of other delays.

The eyes will tell a lot about a persons health. You don't mess around with it. To be honest many parents rightfully so are more concerned about the impact to their paycheck for taking off or going to the doc than addressing something. Many also don't want to think anything is wrong with their baby. I have seen it happen many times they will delay evaluation or doc visits which do negatively impact the kids. So sad. But then there are good ones that catch things quick.

And in the parents defense most parents I get are first time parents and they are clueless. So it is our job to bring to the parents attention and sometimes push a little to get these kids checked out. We are not doctors but if you do this long enough you learn A LOT about kids and potential health problems, spotting developmental delays etc. Enough to know when it warrants having a professional look into it.
