    Beginning Stages of Potty Training...

What do you all say when a parent (typically of an 18 mo old) comes in a says "DCB/DCG peed on the potty for the first time last night" ?

I know all parents, especially first time parents, think that they are ready to start training at that point. And in my experience there is usually a 6mo - 1year gap between first using the potty and being ready to use it full-time.

I don't want to sound like a discouraging grouch, but I also want to let it be known that they are so not ready for potty training, at least at daycare. Our contract says when you believe your child is ready to toilet train, use a 2-3 day method to jump start the process at home, etc... And also that we don't handle potty training until they child is ready to use the potty full time.

Normally I say "that's great ! She's/he about at that age" and then if they ask for next steps - I give them our PT handout.

I guess what I want to know is if anyone has a good, nice, standard response that also matter of fact ? I'm sure I'm not the only one who hears that and cringes

I would say wow thats awesome. Keep working on it and when you guys have some really good progress made, let me know so I can jump on board with you.

    leave it at that.

I also insist that children in the PT process must wear a pull up until they are 100% dry for 3 straight weeks or 15 days here at my house. Once done, then they can wear undies....

I do allow undies first with pull up, if the kid is down to only one accident a day. I used to always allow it and then have to clean up 3-4 poopie or pee underpants....no thanks.....

I like that ! Yes, we have the same dry for two-week policy, No pull-ups if they are using them like diapers, etc.... and have all that written out in the handout.

I just hate to seem like a grump and immediately say "here are the rules". I like what you said, it's a good way to transition between "yay" and "here are the rules".

I say 'that's wonderful, what a great beginning but we have a long road ahead of us'.

I make sure parents know that toilet learning takes a long time and I'm willing to help once the child understands what the hell it all means! My contract states that covering by means of diapers or pullups is necessary until we have 30 accident free days at daycare, yes I'm talking about 2-3 accident free months! It isn't a joke!

I absolutely agree ! We have had so many parents who think its acceptable to let a child have an accident on our floor. I will never understand that mentality. We have a two week accident free rule, and them if there is more than 1 in a two week span they need to go back to wearing something to cover their underwear.

I have far to many things to do in a day that don't involve cleaning up accidents.

This is how I do it also. Pull-ups are fine if that's what the parents wish their child to use but they don't go diaper/training diaper free until they can go 2 weeks without a single accident. If the child has one accident they go back into diapers/training diapers until they clear another 2 weeks accident free.
