    What a PAIN!

I had my initial inspection this week for licensing. Everything went great! (Except for a PEA size spot of chipped paint) She calls me the day after the inspection and tells me that after talking to some other people at the office she has decided that my diaper changing location isn't going to work. The changing table is right outside my bathroom door....it will not fit in my bathroom. She says I will have to use the mat from the changing table and change them on the bathroom floor because they don't want me to have to walk through a doorway to wash my hands. I understand i shouldnt be touching a door handle and rubbing poo all over everything!! But I personally think changing a kid on the BATHROOM floor is gross:confused: she said my other option would be to put the changing table in the bathtub and somehow secure it so it can't move..... Not an option, my son takes his baths there. Any advice on what I could do besides changing them on the floor.

I'm way too old and crunchy to be changing diapers on any floor! Would it be possible to change diapers on the floor of the bathtub?

      That's ridiculous!

Can hubby (or someone else) build/rig up a flat table-top surface that is attatched to a wall in your bathroom that can fold up against the wall when not in use??

That is ridiculous !! I thought our licensing requirements were stringent, but that is really rough...

We have to walk a while from our changing table to the nearest sink (through the kitchen or the master bedroom), and our licensing is okay with that. IMHO, I would rather have you change a diaper in the play area and be able to supervise the other children during the diaper change, and leave to wash your hands, than to be in the bathroom (and not in direct line of sight of the kids) for the entire diaper change AND hand washing.

To me, a home daycare shouldn't be expected to have the same set-up (sinks next to changing tables, etc.) that commercial daycares are required to. It is a HOME after all and wasn't originally designed to be used as a daycare. Therefore some of most everyone's set-up probably has something that is undesirable and could work a little better - but that is just going to happen.

I have a few mats that I use to change diapers on my bathroom floor, I guess I don't understand why you're so opposed to that?

It's not like I'm changing them right underneath the toilet, and the bathroom is cleaned daily so is probably the cleanest floor in my home. The only thing the child is touching is the mat, which is bleached after each use.

I think it's actually ideal because then I don't have to lift children up and down off a changing table all day. I am planning to do licensed care long term and can't imagine what that would do to my back and knees over time.....

So lucky i don't have those regs. i always changed the diapered kids on the changing table outside the bathroom b/c then I can see all the kids at the same time. I wouldnt want to take all the kids in the bathroom with me to change a diaper.

Could you ask if they would make an exemption if you agreed to open the door before startin to change a diaper so you wouldn't be touching the handle? Which I know is probably what you would do anyway but maybe they need it spelled out for them?

Otherwise you can buy bath covers that hold up to 150kg that you could take off at night. Duravit makes some. They might be expensive but perhaps you could make something similar for less?

plus I would assume diapering is waste elimination...which is done in the bathroom for all other times in our lives. ::

I use a tri-fold nap mat. I change each child on the floor on the mat. I keep all diapering supplies in the bathroom anyways and if anything should spill, spray or somehow get off the intended areas, it is in the bathroom where it should be.

After each child, I spray the mat off and dry it with a single use paper towel and change the next child. The sink is right there too so handwashing is also a breeze.

This is exactly how I handle it as well. I used to have a changing table but it took up too much space and some kids were just too big to be lifting up and down all day so I switched to mat on the floor.....much easier and I regained a lot of space!

It is so funny to me how licensing regulations can be so different state to state. We HAVE to have a changing table. Absolutely no diapers can be changed on the floor. This was a really big problem for us at one point, having a DCG who had Dwon Syndrome and wasn't PT at almost 4. Lifting her was nearly impossible...

Maybe changing on the bathroom floor will be fine. I had just NEVER considered it before so my initial reaction was, O HOW GROSS I know my bathroom is clean so I guess it will be ok. Im going to look at the bright side..... I won't have a changing table cluttering up the room thank you all for your input!

Ditto on this.... I also have a floor changing mat and the kids are changed there. The floor is very clean and not right by the toilet, so its not a big deal.

I also use colorx wipes between changes. The floor is mopped daily or sooner if needed. Boys tend to miss the toilet often....

I also change on the floor, its more for saftey reasons because thats all I need, a wiggle bum to wiggle onto the floor. Also, a change table is so big.

Any space for one of those wall mounted changing stations, like they have in restaurant bathrooms?

I had to renovate my bathroom and open up the linen closet to appease my previous licensar, put a changing table in what was formerly a closet. Then I had to buy something to put my towels in.

When we got a new licensar, I asked about the floor mat and she said "of course!" Changing table is sold!!

I have a small book shelf, with a bathroom cubby for each child. I change them on the changing pad (I got a heavy duty one at babies R us) right next to the shelf so all supplies for each child are handy.
