    What Should We Do?

I have been in the home daycare business for 18 years at the same location. The area I live in is not a very desirable area although where our house is located, (which is the second house when turning into our small subdivision).Looks like a mansion compared to the houses around us. The crime rate is bad although crime happens everywhere. Business has been slow for about 2 years or so now and I think it contributes to the area I live in. I get calls and as soon as I give my location, I can hear hesitation in their voice. We both want to move to lot nicer neighborhood and have wanted to for some years now but with the inconsistency of my income, it just ends up being talk. Can someone reassure me that with that kind of income from my husband along with an inconsistent income of mine, that it can be done. If there is anyone out there who can give me some tips on making this happen and is there anyone who just rely solely on husbands income because of the uncertainty of income from daycare, I would really appreciate it..

    Thanks

    Rachel

I totally wish I could reassure you or give you some sort of guarantee that it would work for it is kind of inpossible to do.

For me, personally, it is MY income that is the consistent one. My DH is also self-employed and his income is not at all consistent. He makes pretty decent money but it is not at all regular or something that can be counted on weekly, monthly or even yearly.

If you honestly believe that clients are not coming to you based on where your location is and you do have the opportunity to move to a more desireable location, I say go for it. The worst regret in life is the chance not taken, kwim? I would much rather have tried and failed than not have tried at all.

I agree with Blackcat. Plus, it sounds like if you could move to a more desirable area, your income would become more consistent. Good luck, I know that going from the known to the unknown can be scary.

I am right with BC. My husband is a private contractor, his income is not at all steady. When we made the decision to move for these exact reasons, we saved like CRAZY. We had 6 months worth of living expenses in savings when we moved and I was STILL nervous. After 3 months, I was making more than I was before the move (higher end area/was able to significantly raise my rates). It has been 3 years open here and I have a waiting list, prior I was struggling to get ANY clients. Nothing in my program changed, just my location.
