Vent and Question

so after sending home kids sick left and right the last few weeks I sent home a letter explaining the DC illness policy as clear as day.


if kid is vomiting on sunday, they can't return until tuesday and that is only if they were 100%b well all day on Monday.

I even talked to the parents about it face to face..


well sure enough this morning I have to send a DCK away becuase they were sent home tuesday for vomiting and was still vomiting last night, but because there is no fever, the parents want to bring DCK back....they do not think DCK is sick?????? The DCM was not happy at all that I had to send the DCK home.

I don't know what else to do to get them to understand?? BTW there is a small language barrier here, so I do try to cut them some slack to get them to understand. they are a very nice family and they always follow the rules.

Would you take the time to explain the policy again in writing?

Rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat until they get it. Stand your ground and do not make exceptions.

That really is the only way.

thanks so much BC... I love that letter and plan to use it.

I was in tears this morning because the parent was so mad and confused and upset.

I do wonder if the wording may be a little much for them to understand????

Could you maybe run the letter through google translator? It won't be great, but maybe enough for them to understand what you mean? It might help. I can see how they would be upset if they really don't understand...

yes on two different occasions. I really do believe that they don't see this as an illness. YOu do have to understand that in some countries you don't go to the doctor or miss school or work unless you are basically dying.

This is their first child in care so I am sure they are just not understanding

I am betting they FULLY understand and are kind of using their language barrier to "pretend" not to understand...kwim?

Bringing a puking kid to someone and actually expecting that person to care for them has nothing to do with not understanding the language in my opinion.

I think you need to just tell them "If child is sick in any way, he cannot attend." period.

SO IN THE time that has passed, I had a friend of mine translate for me. He was very good at it too, so proud of him.

They didn't understand. They said well the DCK is happy, so maybe DCK ate too much food. They are being serious by the way.

So my friend told them that because we don't know what DCK has and because it is not ok to throw up for 3 days that they need to stay home until they are not throwing up anymore.

My friend grew up in his home country and told me that when he was small he went to school sick. he says he recalls throwing up in the bathroom at school.

He told me not to be too upset with them, but now that they understand, there is no reason that it should happen again.

cool! Glad they get it now and praying you don't have to go over it again.

I am sorry for assuming they understood. I should have given them the benefit of the doubt since cultures vary so much from what we know as acceptable that it is often hard to see beyond our own beliefs.

America is one of the few countries I believe that you go to the Dr. for almost anything. This has actually only happened in the last 30 years or so.

So I could see people from other countries/cultures not understanding why a child couldn't come to childcare.

On the rare occasions that I bring my children I have seen people with runny noses coming in or something that a good night sleep wouldn't cure. Heck at this point my own mother (who came from europe) loves to visit the dr's too. Every little ache she needs to go, she wasn't like this before it was like suddenly one day she needed to go and now goes all the time.

OT but my daughter is in England and she went to the doctor for a sore throat, chills, fever, chest pains. (she gets strep easy) They told her to quit being so American its just a virus...

this family does not even go to the dentist. Ihave to tell them all the time to have DCK teeth looked at.
