    11 Month Old Not Napping

I am just starting out a new little one at my home daycare. She is 11 months old. When she comes in she is always happy and plays well with the other children. She still naps twice a day and her mom would like her to do that here as well. When she first started coming she wouldn't even drink her bottle for me but she does now. The only issue I have is sleeping! I put her in the playpen in a quiet room and she SCREAMS this panicked scream! I have done the CIO and it goes on forever! Her mother and I are out of ideas on what we can do. If I snuggle with her she struggles and continues to scream. The only thing I can do is finally give in, get her up and let her play but then she ends up cranky because she is tired. I am at a loss! Any suggestions?

I'd try doing just the afternoon nap. She may be feeling as though she's missing the fun when she gets laid down for 2 naps.

I'd try that, too. I had to use CIO with my 11 mo here (now 13 months) too. I tried the Ferberish method, but that just got her madder.

are you sure you are doing things the way mom does at home? how long has she been with you? is she full time?

my guess is that mom is co-sleeping, rocking or nursing to sleep or holding baby during the whole nap or doing something that you cant replicate at daycare. some parents take kids for car or stroller rides every night to get them to sleep and again, doesnt work at daycare. you need to find out EXACTLY what mom is doing at home. i am not saying that mom should dictate what you have to do at daycare....only that a discussion with mom about particulars will often clue you in to why napping is not going well. when does mom put her down? how? with music, paci, blanket, rocking, etc etc? how long does nap last at home? I have had parents say their kid takes a nap only to find out their definition of nap is 15 or 30 minutes!

I would do the one nap too. We I worked, we started doing one nap at 12 months, sometimes at 11 and I have found that the children get used to the one nap schedule and sleep 1-3 hours-I think mainly because everyone napped at the same time and it was quiet and the children would see everyone laying down and they kind of followed each other. Of course there are always those few who tried their hardest to stay up! I have had plenty of daycare children who would give their kids two naps at home, but at daycare they only had one. Some of them would get cranky, but by the time nap time came, they would fall right to sleep!
