    CPR & First Aid

Has anyone taken the Pedfacts first aid class through the AAP or just basic first aid and cpr?

I've never taken a basic CPR & First Aid class for child care. I'm in CA so we're required to take a specialized class meant for child care. CPR is Infant, child and adult CPR, and then in addition to that we take first aid and preventative health and safety. We can only take the training from organizations approved by our licensing department. For me and the area that I live I can only take them from The American Heart Association or from The American Red Cross and it has to be in person. Courses that are taken online or self-directed courses aren't approved for us.

You might want to check with licensing (if you are required to be licensed or registered) to make sure that if you are required to take CPR for a job or for FCC that the classes count.

Ive taken the child & infant cpr training but i also recently took a course called Pedfacts or pediatric first aid for caregivers and teachers. Its developed throught the american academy of pediatrics. Very good course and covered the choking and breathing portions of cpr. It was a great class and the instructor who covers new england was fantastic. Wondering if anyone else has taken it and what your thoughts were.

no... regarding your question, but as Miss V. said, it is best to take first aid/cpr training that is designed for pediatrics as the methods vary from treating adults! check out the Red Cross if your state has no such specific training requirement outlined. if it is designed for peds... then give it a shot.

Same here. Our state speifically requires American Redcross or The American Heart Association course and in person ONLY.

The last course I took covered choking, as well a defibrilation for children and adults pretty extensively as well as the normal COR and first aide.

                CPR AND Preventative health

                Hello All,

I am new here and starting my small family daycare application. I live in LA (near Downtown) and I am looking for a CPR and preventative health class. I called licensing and they could not refer me anywhere and I would hate to take the wrong class. Does anyone have any referrals?

California doesn’t require that we use any specific source, though some LPA or offices do.

Sonoma County Licensing only requires that it be pediatric CPR and First Aid from a licensed instructor.

I use a local retired EMT. He teaches Pediatric Plus from the Health and Safety Institute. Our local resource and referral office sponsors classes at the local Fire Station licensed through EMS....the course it Emergency Response for Childcare Providers.

Thank you for your reply. I am waiting on a call back from the RR program near me to get more info.

The first time you need the Red Cross classes. It takes Saturday and Sunday. You can Pediatric and Adult First Aid and CPR one day, and the California Child Care Health and Safety Course the other day.

I did the heartsaver pediatric first aid CPR AED online through the American Heart Association. Then I found a certified nurse to test me. It was so much more convenient. She issued my card after testing me.
