    Process Art

Can y'all tell me more about what you do in your daycare?

I'm changing it from product centered to more process centered. I still have to throw in some product centered art because most of my parents obsess over that. ::

I've done stuff like cutting out the shapes, say for like a lion or snowman and have given the children the shapes and let them glue them the way they wanted. It turns out really cute! For the older kids who can "cut" they would cut the shapes themselves and put them where they wanted. I never gave them a product that was already done the right way to look at, they do it themselves. Or different textured things and they can glue it on paper. Lots of painting! Also environmental (not sure what to call it) art is fun, let the children gather things from the environment such as sticks, leaves, dirt...etc. and let them make a project! The projects where you cut out shapes are provider made, but the end result is process art! It's really cool to see a toddler make a lion face or a snowman! sometimes you can tell what it is and sometimes not Oh yea, for the older kids you could do a week or so long project where everyday they add something new. They did this in a class I took-I had to observe a Head Start program and the children made a huge robot and everyday they would add to it..it was really neat! I would also recycle sensory table items and have the kids make something out of that. Sorry, art is my fav thing to do with kids!

Daycare, yes! I will go back and look. I went there specifically to look at the reading challenge you have going on and didn't have time to poke around.

Melilley, thank you. We do quite a bit of the "do what you want with the materials." I attempt to do things that go along with our curriculum as well. Is this a no no? Should I not be "encouraging" that and just let them be?

I did both. Sometimes I chimed in and other times, I didn't. With the really young kids I kind of helped, but I would give them the material and hold it over the paper,if we were gluing things, and wherever it dropped, that's where it stayed. The actual way you're "supposed" to talk to the kids is something like this: "Jenny, you used the blue paint to make your picture", or "Jenny, your spider has 8 legs" etc... so that you are not "labeling" their work. That's what I was taught in my CHDV classes anyways. And you're "supposed" to talk like that all the time. I personally could never talk to the children like that all day! It seems a little cold to me! Sorry I'm a little off subject!

I did do art that went along with curriculum as well, just made it so the children did it, most of the time. While I agree with process are, sometimes the children love us to do it with them! And I know what you mean about the parents being obsessed with product art! The worst is when a parent asks a child "what is that?"-in that certain tone of voice KWIM?

:: I do talk like that. But, I say it with a bouncy or exciting tone if I can tell they are proud of whatever they're showing me.

              Even when we're at recess.
"May I please show you something?" (what we teach them to say)
              "Yes! "
"I'm on top of the jungle gym!!!"
"You are so tall on top of the jungle gym!!! "
              "Yes I am!"

Girl. We found a child's precious artwork in our lawn the other day. The little girl was so upset because the sprinklers had ruined it (it was left overnight). The Mom said, "Hmm"
Luckily, I scan all of their work and she was satisfied with a copy of it.

I once put all of a child's artwork in a bag and placed it in their cubby to take home. Well, the next day I found the whole bag in the garbage! I couldn't believe it...at least throw it away where I can't see it and hopefully the child can't either. Maybe I'm just obsessed, I have a huge tote full of stuff my daughter did...
I didn't mean cold earlier, I just am used to talking different, well I do talk that way sometimes just not all the time. If that makes sense

I am basically more of an 80s throwback. I'm very "Bev Bos". I supply the materials, but I don't suggest what to do. I let them think of things on their own. They come up with good ideas that I never thought of.

I give them cups of paint, and they mix the paint themselves with spoons and brushes...they always go home with preschool grey...but, they spent loads of time making that color.

I gave the kids a metal hamster wheel a few years ago, and they have come up with a hundred ways to use it. Unless it's very dangerous, or very loud, I let them do whatever they want. I let them stand on chairs to paint higher, or build higher. I let them stand on the table (with permission) to build higher. Almost everything can be done, but they need to come up with the solution. I might drop hints...but, I don't give the answer.

http://pinterest.com/pin/29132728810357017/ <--we do this almost every week. Even the 12 month olds can do this.

That is sad. I understand throwing items away because of space issues, but I am weird about saving a SMALL copy. That's why I scan. A burned disc with hundreds of pieces of artwork on it takes up no room whatsoever.

I didn't take you saying it was cold as an insult. :: It just made me laugh because that is how I talk! LOL! But, I sound pretty cold on a regular basis because of my Asperger's. I'm a very matter of fact kind of person, but I do attempt to be warm and friendly as often as I remember to be. With children, I'm just silly and upbeat anyways so I think my "factual responses" to the things they do still sounds nice and praise-like.
lovethis Seriously, you didn't offend me.
