    Bumps and Bruises

Hi. I have seen threads on here about children getting hurt while at your homes....I have also seen that some of you have a policy in your handbooks and I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing what their policy is. I'm writing my handbook and sometimes I have trouble wording things so that they sound professional....

I might be able to help...

What are looking to say about injuries?

Do you just want parents to know they do happen or are you trying to write a policy letting parents know how you handle them?

    Do you carry liability insurance?

This is what I have, but I'm not sure I like the wording:

Children learn from what they do and getting bumps and bruises is a part of growing up. The provider(s) will document any injury that the provider(s) see and will make a report of it. The provider(s) will also check over each child when they arrive and throughout the day.

I am checking into insurance, I'm just waiting until I go through my state required orientation next week.

          How about....

Bumps and bruises are a normal part of childhood. Please rest assured, however that every effort will be made to protect your child from serious injuries while in my care.

A simple child check upon arrival and throughout the day will be a part of our daily routine. Please notify the provider of any injuries, marks or bruises that may have occurred prior to drop off.

Should an injury occur during the day, it will be documented for the child's file. The parent will also recieve a copy. This report will contain time of injury, nature of injury, how the injury was treated and any recommended follow up needed.

Should the injury require medical attention, the proper steps will be followed and the parent will be immediately notified.

It's a little longer than what you have but I think it covers your bases.

Awesome! Thanks, perfect wording to what I wanted to say! I sometimes know what I want to say and when I go to write it down, it doesn't sound like I wanted it to.

              Here's mine:

Bumps and scratches are inevitable even though every effort is made to keep the children safe through supervision and child-proofing. Please expect that children may experience a minor scrape or bruise from child play.

Emergency plans are easily accessible at all times in the unlikely event that an emergency takes place.

              Minor Injuries
If a minor accident occurs, first aid will be applied. Cuts and scrapes will be washed with soap and water and a bandage applied.

If the injury is not life-threatening, but requires further treatment, the client will be contacted. An incident report will be completed for all accidents that leave a mark or involve a hard fall and a copy will be given to the client upon arrival.

And then it goes on to talk about medical emergencies, fire, outages, evacuations and drills.
