    Florida FCC providers and VPK

Do you find that you are losing kids at 4 to go to VPK. Do you offer VPK in your home. I have one that is turning 4 so I am just wading it out right now. Just wandering how others handle this?

I am not a FCC, I am a small center, but yes, we do lose them to vpk. I refuse to offer it, the red tape is a nightmare. Also, if you offer vpk, parents can.choose to only come for the free portion of the day, and if they do that, you are losing serious income. I do preschool and school readiness activities and all my graduates have done great in school. I had a parent return once after trying it, because the program was crowded, disorganized and the other children acted crazy. I have found that vpk is mostly offered by big box centers who want to fill up unused space and cash in on the free money. Parents who care more about quality than lower tuition normally stay with me until kindy.

I agree with you and that is why I do not offer VPK but this past year it seems like all the parent are thinking about is the $$$. I am thinking about just shifting to infant/toddler care after this group moves on so I don't have to worry about this in the future.

Find out what vpk providers are charging for their program with "wrap around " care. If a center is charging say 125 per week, it may not be much less than you already charge. Maybe offer a small discount to 4 and 5 year olds. Yeah, infants and toddlers is one way to keep your enrollment up, but then you aging them out early. I have mostly 2 and 3 year olds, but some 4 and 5.
Not many other Floridians here! Welcome

Also, I have 2 vpk providing centers within a block of me, yet I remain mostly full. Some parents care more about my small group size, home- environment and low staff turnover than money. But generally, vpk is a burden and really nit that great for the children.
