Anyone Having Fun With the Elf on a Shelf?

We are on year four now and it gets better every year. Our elf, Flick, is here.

He's hanging out on the speaker shelf today.....who knows tomorrow!

The kids have been talking to him all day today. We set the stage yesterday with reading the book and then watching the short movie before home time. They were so excited to see him this morning!

Yes ! Buddy, our elf, is here - and we LOVE him. He has been touched once...and we had to write a letter to Santa asking for Buddy's magic to come back. I dictated it directly from the child who touched Santa, and it was just precious. But overall, we are having fun with Buddy !

Do all your day care families also use the elf at home? I was thinking of doing it in our preschool room, but was thinking that some of the kids might wonder why there is an elf at daycare and not at home. Especially if we read the book too.

I only use it with my own kids upstairs, but the DCKs get a kick out of it when they walk in in the morning (if they can see him).

Today, Melvin is head first into a bag of goldfish. You can only see his legs.

Yesterday, he drew funny faces on my family's picture in the hallway and then was tucked behind it, holding some markers.

The day before that, he unraveled some toilet paper and made a little cozy nest on the bathroom floor.

Another day, he fell asleep on a our table, under a doll blanket with a pillow.

And one other day, he was floating in a toy boat in our sink.

We have LOTS of fun with Melvin!!!!!

          Not elves, but deer

Our home is watched by 8 not so little deer all through the year. They send reports to Santa on Christmas eve. ;-).

Part of Santas magic, I even have sparkly hats with their names that go on when the tree goes up. Lol.

(no, the kids never ask HOW we got them. ) but I'd just tell them Christmas magic. If they did.

We don't do elf on the shelf. Never got into it. A few of my friends do it and post pictures every day.
The thing I'd like to know is:
Why is an elf, who is supposed to report the children's naughtiness (or niceness) back to Santa, getting into so much mischief? isn't that kind of counter productive? I'd be nervous my kids would see the elfs "antics" and copy him, saying it must be ok cuz the elf did it and he's still buddies with Santa.

Our elf Ginger. He's just for my kids but he sure is a goofball. I would also like to know about the feet and am thinking about opening him up and putting some pipe cleaner inside so he can hold things and sit.

I personally have not bought an elf, nor do I plan on it.

Nothing against it, just not how we celebrate Christmas here.

However, this thread reminded me of this blog entry about it and I thought I would share since this blogger is one of my absolute favorites and she is hilarious, even if you don't agree with her, she is still funny!! ::

She does use some foul language so be warned....

Our elf got into the marshmellows, chocolate and graham crackers on the counter. What a mess!! The kids caught him red handed this morning trying to make smores.

I'm thinking tomorrow that he'll make some snowflake cutouts and give him some safety scissors and some paper. Maybe sunday I'll pour some popcorn on the counter and he can make popcorn angels ::.

Ours is a naughty little elf too. I'm going to have to steal your idea and use it sometime next week. I was starting to run out of ideas already and it's only the 7th of the month .

What are some silly/fun ideas that you ladies have caught Elf on a Shelf doing? This is our first year doing it. We don't celebrate the holidays like this either but I thought the kids would like the surprise ... they did . We're doing a mishmash Christmas this year .... we're having our "traditional" Christmas like we do every year but I wanted the kids to experience Christmas with my old Mexican traditions the way that I used to (processions, nativity sets, reenactment of the journey to bethlehem, holy kings celebration etc ... which all run through to January) and then we also got Elf on a shelf. I hope my kids don't develop a complex ::.

We do our own version without the mischief. I just bought a little fairy elf that sits in a spot in our mantle. I tell the children that at night when we are asleep the elf uses magic to fly back to Santa and tell him if they've been naughty or nice that day. My own son asked me the other day if next year we could just leave that elf in the box next year ha ha! Anyway I tell the kids Santa expects them to be good, not perfect. No one is perfect, for sure not me!

I have never heard of the "elf on the shelf" until this very moment! I think it's a cute idea and is something we might do with our own kiddo - but probably not a daycare tradition.

Keep posting those blog links, blackcat - hubs and I love em!!! ::
