After reading what some of you are going through on here with parents and then what I know a few of my friends are dealing with in their own childcares, I'm beginning to think that are parents just stessing/melting down/breaking down this month?

Its crazy and we are only on the 5th day of the month!!!:confused:

the other night I was at school talking to my professor. I told her that the state is so worried about improvement for the children and are spending all of this money, but really what they need to spend some of this cash on is parenting.

Why doesn't anyone require parenting classes?? We are not born to know how to parent? I mean even my computer has a tutorial. I think that parents need to be required to take parenting classes every two years.

Lets face it, if they did, I think we would see a whole different world of children and students....

My teacher said she could not agree more....... I guess we could all go on with wishful thinking

Oh, my goodness I so totally agree!

I could think of so much more to do with that money then what they are doing with it.

I guess they know though that parents won't do it and we have a choice but if we want to keep up we have to do it. They have us by the caveman hair grip but not the parents.

Last week was insanity for all of my families and then everything magically - not even joking, like overnight - resolved completely.

I hope so because I just termed a family that has been with me for over a year..... AND I am still dealing with parent issues right now...

I completely agree with this. We need to have a license to operate and own all kind of things - but to raise and GUIDE another human being we require absolutely NO relevant education or knowledge... completely and utterly insane!

I am sure that we all could go on and on and on about this subject.....

But really, it is up to the parents to create a successful student. Kids can have all of the early education possible, but if the parents are not on board with the teachers, doing the assignments with their children, helping the children get organized, turn things in on time, then the child will never learn how to be a good student as they progress through school.

Our kinder classes here are required to read 600pages a month. Yes that's right 600. The teacher told me that MUCH less than half of the parents are reading to the students.....

I'm not even, even going to touch this one-unrealistic goal. In a way I really don't blame the parents. Seriously 600 pages!!! OK I touched it-

I have had many, many teachers comment on my childrens knowledge of different things. It floors me because its nothing outlandish to me but others I guess. Teachers are always impressed what I expose my children to-the library/museum/historical sights/outdoor play/family time/pets/concerts/plays/the list goes on. To me its second nature to do those, I can't imagine not doing them.

I actually don't think 600 pages is extreme... but both my hubby and I are avid readers. Our mothers read to us daily beginning while we were still in the womb - which I truly believe helped us become great readers (we now read to our unborn babe, hehe). Both hubby and I were scored as reading at university level in grade 4-5.
I believe children need to be read to every single day - and 600 pages/month only adds up to 20 pages/day which I think is absolutely doable.
This is just my own opinion though - I know many will disagree, that's fine.

My sisters son was read to in the womb and he is not 5 years old reading at a 6th grade level. I would believe that you were reading at that level at that age.

And even if early reading doesn't benefit a child in regards to getting ahead educationally - it certainly helps develop imagination and creativity.

I just did some quick math (not my strong suit, ) to see how reasonable 600 pages is...
I read 2-3 books to my DC kids each day - each book averaging about 15 pages. That's 45 pages a day. I am open an average of 22 days per month. So a kid who is here full-time is read almost 1000 pages a month with JUST ME. I know many of them are read to at home as well.

I just termed a family with my 3 years, there's something weird going on. My kids/dh couldn't believe I termed them. (hmm, maybe it's me! )

I completely agree. We do morning circle/story and afternoon circle story. Each kiddo gets a book choice, that's 12 books a day. 12 x minimum 10 pages, well, you do the math. We read A LOT here. About half my kids get read to at home.

I'm an avid reader, read to my kiddo's,sang and read in the womb, the whole bit and none of mine are readers-out of 4 none are. They totally take after their daddy. I always dreamed of sitting around as a family and reading at night-thats a no go. My mom read to me as a baby, child and I had hundreds of books (I still have them). I didn't even read till 1st grade though and then off I went.

Now are the kids suppose to be reading that or the parents? If its the kids alot of kids aren't even reading enough to read 20 pages a night. If its the parents that is douable but not all parents are readers either. I know of some adults that read very slowly and so 20 pages would take the forever to read-I mean forever.

that is awesome.....have to say that I am right there with you.... I even do a reading contest each month...

If you want I can pm you my site so you can see our Christmas read competition. The parents love it and I am trying hard to get them all on board. Most of them are participating.
