carpet rug vs foam mats for sound

Right now I have foam mats and I love them because they are easy to clean. BUT with hardwood floors I'm wondering if a carpet rug would absorb the sound more. Anyone know?? I am worred about it not being as clean though, I just have a thing about carpet.....I hate it!
