    1 yo & sippy cup

I went cold turkey on my 1 yo 2 wks ago. I packed up all of my bottles and put them away.

I've tried 3 different sippy cups and she refuses them all. I've tried milk, juice (straight and diluted), and water. I've tried squirting fluid in her mouth and she spits it out. She has not take an ounce of fluid here in over 2 weeks.

Mom still nurses twice a day and says she takes a sippy cup at home. (I've asked her to bring it tomorrow.) I know she gets thirsty because she just about rips Mom's shirt off when she gets here at night.

She doesn't drink out of a straw, either.

Any suggestions? I've never had one refuse a sippy cup before.

I would use the cup that mom says she uses at home. Does mom also give her bottles at home as well? If so, maybe she could stop with the bottles at home as well so that there is consistency between home and childcare.

Is she 1 yr old as in 12 months? Or older? I've always waited till closer to 16 or 18 months before I start phasing out the bottle.

Wow, I think I have her identical twin at my house. Yesterday I caved and gave her a bottle since when I offered the sippy she decided to throw a fit and hold her breathe till she was ready to pass out. She still only took 1 OZ of milk from the bottle. I have tried to offer lots of fruits that will give her at least a little fluid.

I have had children refuse sippy cups before! I was a lead teacher in a mobile infant room and it was my responsibility to transition the children to sippy cups, not easy sometimes! I have had several children refuse their sippy cups and their parents were really worried about the amount of fluid they were getting. This is what I did and it worked!
I would offer the child their sippy cup at EVERY meal and snack time. Even if they just threw it. Repetition will get them used to having a cup. If after they ate and still didn't drink anything, I would give the child their bottle. After about a month or so (sometimes sooner), they would get used to the sippy cup and didn't need bottles. Just like with new food, offer it even if they do not accept it at first and after a while they will adapt to the new way of eating/drinking.
Also, I would use the cup that her mom says she uses at home. Some children will only use one kind of cup.

There is NO WAY this child drinks anything out of a sippy cup. I tried the cup Mom brought this morning. There's no teeth marks and the child wouldn't even let me get it near it's mouth.

I agree! There must be consistency!

Yeah, some parents like to lie and say they do it at home because they want you to do all the work for them so they don't have to deal with it! Same goes with potty training. It's so annoying! Sometimes I think the parents should do our jobs for a week just to see what it's like!

Mom still nurses. She rarely gave bottles at home.

Mom has never brought breast milk. I used formula up until a month ago.

I say repeat, repeat, repeat. A child over one does not need a bottle, and mom nurses, so she's still getting fluid at some point.

If you're willing, put a towel under her chair and give her an open cup with tiny amounts of fluid in it. Maybe start with water. If your climate allows, try it outside a few times first.

It sounds like you are doing everything you can! I would just keep offering the sippy first then the bottle. Even if they don't drink at least you are offering it, there is really nothing more you can do. You can't force the child to drink, hopefully they will get used to the cup soon! Good Luck!

                            Yes! Repetition is key!

Tommy Tipee makes great sippy cups. My friend got her EBF 7 month old to take one (who had previously refused all sippys and bottles).
