    Hand Foot And Mouth

how long do you make dck stay home with hand, foot and mouth. I just read that the rash is not contagious, but when they run a fever it is.

I had this spread through my daycare a few months ago.. and I got it too...
In fact.. I wasn't totally sure who started it... but I may have been the 'typhoid Mary'...

Well this literally just was at my dc. I had never heard of it before. The mom of the child who had it and had it once before told me every doctor has different opinions. So since that's exactly what I found out. I called our local health department. They told me as long as they have no fever, no more sores in their mouth, and the sores on the body have all been open and crusted over they could return. However, the virus stays contagious in the stool for weeks after. Hope that helps.

Hand Foot and Mouth is a virus. Antibiotics won't matter or do any good.

The incubation period is 3-6 days after exposure to begin shoing symptoms. The contagious period is during the first week of illness and possibly for several weeks after illness. The virus may be shed for several weeks in stool. Infected persons who may not seem sick are able to spread the virus.

You should exclude anyone with a fever.

Here is a handy fact sheet about HFM http://www.hennepin.us/files/Hennepi...AND%20FOOT.pdf

My daycare was exposed for the first and hopefully only time this summer. I closed because my son got it as well as a one daycare child and the original child. I was closed for a week, that's how long it took for my son's blisters to disappear completely, and when I opened did not let anyone come back that still had any signs of the illness (even crusted scabs) and washed my hands even more than usual after changing diapers. It didn't spread to anyone else. The other child that contracted (2 year old) it had it bad and was a near being hospitalized.

Yes, I would definitely let her know.

Here is the parent sheet you can print out and give to mom. It has all the same info about incubation, symptoms to watch for and what to do and for how long.

Thanks for your help... I have been in contact with both parents and the one with hfm will keep her home for the time being. the other mom was freaking out... she called to tell me that grandpa would be picking him up so I let her know about it.. so she did not have to hear from grandpa. LOL..

But if both get it, I mind as well keep them both... I did get paid for it.. hahahaha (well, that is what my husband just told me)

If you decide to keep them if they get it you should check to make sure you won't get it. I remember someone on here talking about their teenagers? Husband? getting it so you should be aware.
