    From Crazy to Crashing

I have a DCK that is almost 4.

every day this kid goes from super crazy to straight crashing out.

Hyper level is so over the top that I have ZERO control over them. Usually this no matter where we are, and the child is often reminded to settle down, but to have fun. It never works

The parents tell me DCK is the same at home.

Then as soon as this kid sits down for any reason, they are out sleeping....

Has anyone ever dealt with a child like this? Is this normal? How can I help this child gain control???

Okay, sleep deprivation can mimic ADHA. Check out Mary Sheedy Kurcinika! She has wonderful resources on the importance of sleep, how kids are over-scheduled, and go to bed too late in this country. Sounds like this might be the issue.

They sleep a good 2.5-3 hours at my house and sleeps from 8pm to 630am at home.....

I will still look into what you are offering...

Thank you so much for responding.....

How is the child's diet? That sounds like the effect of artificial dyes/flavors/sweeteners. It could be legitimate ADHD, or even other food allergies besides what I said above.
Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!

well here is the thing..... I know for a fact that the DCP are not honest with me about how this child eats. they claim the child eats great foods...

Why do I know that they are not being truthful.....one morning I went to the local coffee house drive through and through the little drive through window I see DCD, DCM and g-ma. DCK is eating a cake -pop and it's only 715am.

We talked about not doing that anymore, but the kid tells me all of the time that they have this or that. I can't say that it happens every day, but it does happen.

example today we went to play land. an indoor play place at 9am....this kid was going 1100mph the whole time. Sweat dropping off face, screaming at the top of lungs, did not stop to rest for almost 3.5 hours. As soon as they hit the car seat.OUT. We did not even make it out of the parking lot and this child was OUT!!!!!

Here I do not serve anything artificial at all....ZERO I only serve the real deal

I have a couple like this-go, go, go the entire mornig. Wears me out big time. These were my no nappers earlier this week and the last two days they are crashing so hard.

They litterly are shaking most of the time if I have the sit do do projects or play. Let them outside and they run the entire time.

Eat very good at home and here. Up early, early in the morning and come in my house going 100 miles an hour.

If you find a solution let me know-please (batting my eyelashes at you) ::
Each day is a fresh start
            Never look back on regrets

We only get one shot at this!!

I think you are talking about my youngest grandson. He's like a shark, he'll die if he holds still for 5 mins.

well what I am doing now is not working...

I remove the child from the chaos to a quiet environment and I ask them are you having fun? Of course they say yes and I say that is wonderful. I want you to continue having fun, but when you scream like that, it really hurts my ears(or whatever the issue is). Sooooo, if you want to keep on having fun, please be sure that you are not hurting your friends ears by yelling. Let's have fun, but try to keep it down some..................

Normally, I have to place my hands on his shoulders or face to get him to make eye contact with me. Otherwise DCK CANNOT for anything make eye contact for longer than a second or two.....

What I say goes in one ear and out the other. I normally have to have him stop what he is doing and tell him ok, since you can't listen here are your new choices....

Since he is so crazy, I have him jump like a frog until he asks to stop and then I will say would you like to color a picture or read a book. I get him to calm himself down, but that will only last so long, before he's jumping out of his seat.

I did make a jump mat for him that he can go to at anytime and just jump his little brains out...... But he can't seem to keep it on the mat........

I have to get right in their face to get them to make eye contact. Same thing, they usually have no idea what I said.

Mine have all fallen out of the little chairs and busted their lips on the table. One has permanent tooth damage from it. One doesn't sit in a chair at the table because they can't sit DOWN in it. They constantly stand and push their chair back.

I posted about wondering if it was ADD because they usually don't nap and just pretty much are all over druing nap. So do go 100 miles an hour during the day and nap makes me wonder if something is up with mine.

I think we have the same kid....this kid ran straight into a wall at the library the other day. they walk around with their head in the clouds... 99.9% of the time says things that has ZERO relation to what we are all talking about and I just can't connect with the child, make me feel so sad.....................

The difference between mine and yours is that as soon as this kid is sitting down like on the floor for circle time or carseat, lunch time tables,. they pass out.

It may well be ADHD though not much will be done until they enter school. For some children eliminating ALL gluten and casine has helped. We did not try that with out son. We eliminated sugar and food dyes but that did not help him. The gluten and casine came up after he was a child.

the jumping is a great solution if it is ADHD those kids need to move. weighted vests also helps some of them.

caffeine because it is a stimulant helps many calm down.
                      It:: will wait

                        what is a weighted vest?

I have one that I use for my workouts, but it weights 75lbs..... I am sure this is not what you mean? Is it something similar?

It sounds like a sensory processing disorder almost. The need for constant movement (proprioceptive input). Try a small trampoline, jump rope, etc. My ds loveeeessss the tires and does football style 'drills' with them.

Heavy work activities and proprioceptive input (gross motor, fine motor, oral motor, etc.) which are useful in calming unfocused, overaroused children.

If you need him to sit still, find something small and hand held. Sticky tack/playdoh/stress balls work really well. Put something heavy on him. Have a small backpack? fill it with books. A heavy blanket on his lap helps my ds (he will often do homework WITH a wii balance board on his lap!)

If they are seeking out excessive proprioceptive input, they are looking for a way to calm and organize their nervous system. They may seem disruptive, full of excessive energy, or even unsafe. These are the crashers, jumpers, movers, and shakers! These are the children we ABSOLUTELY want to target with heavy work activities. It WILL make a difference in them!

There are alot of things you can do to see if you can help him chill out

If whether or not he has ADD/ADHD or a behavior issue; his diet and even his environment can highly influence his hyperactivity and crashing.

I have an ECE teacher who said her son has ADD/ADHD and he now has a diet with no added sugar as well as no food coloring (like red and yellow dyes- those can be the worse for this issue) because they jank up the wiring of the brain and the synapsis (electrical connections or "sparks" that transmit infromation) go haywire and make it difficult to focus. so maybe see if you can do this in your daycare or suggest it to the parents, this will get the best results to see if that is the issue.

One thing you can try is making his environment less overstimulating like lowering the lights or maybe if you have bright colored walls consider covering them for a day with a white/cream colored sheet and see what happens. if you have music playing through out the day either pick softer music or limiting/eliminating music unless during an art activity (music can be distracting and hard to tune out during conversations) if you notice he is screaming or talking loudly try talking in a softer tone or maybe whisper when adressing him, he will become more aware of volume and almost automatically lower his tone which can help calm him down as well as calming you and even the other kids down.
