    Contagious Sickness Exposure

I had a DCM text me that DCB was exposed to a virus that apparently put her neighbor's child (2yrs) in the hospital (they had to call and ambulance because he couldn't breathe) and is very ill. DCB is here M-Thur so not today.

She didn't remember what it was called  but said the hospital told the mom it is going around right now and anyone this child was exposed to should be watching for a high fever and white bumps (wort like) in the mouth and go to the dr asap as it can be deadly to children 2 and under. I have my own 11mo old and a DCG who is 11mos! So of course now I'm super paranoid and this DCM couldn't remember what it was called or the other symptoms besides the high fever and white bumps in mouth. Also apparently it is spread through saliva (DCB ****s his fingers and touched everything!). Has anyone heard of this or know what it is by chance?

My own DD was up all night with a runny nose that just appear last night, no fever but I'm paranoid! I'm thinking of putting up all the current toys but in all reality if they've been exposed it's already happened. I still plan to clean everything

Not sure what it would be but we have a school in the state that the school district shut down yesterday till next week as they had over 150 kids (300 kids in the school) and 15 staff members come down with an illness yesterday. All in the span of 2 hours and they know its not food related. That was just yesterday morning and they were expecting more illnesses pretty much later in the day.

The health department is investigating as they are afraid of it going rampid with siblings at other schools and then parents!

Could she be talking about Hand, Foot, Mouth disease (also known as Coxsackie Virus)? One of my almost 2 year old got this. He only had sores in his mouth and was a minute from being hospitalized. He wouldn't eat, drink and was in pain.

I should add that it's not usually deadly but is highly contagious. my son and a daycare child got it on the same day about 5 days after a daycare child had a high fever. They all had different symptoms...my son had blisters all over his feet for a week and a high fever one night but no blisters in his mouth, the first daycare child had a high fever and some splotches (that's from mom) and the second daycare child had it on his hands and feet and had a high fever. He also has asthma and it effected his breathing.

Wow! I didn't even hear about this! i'll have to check it out. The boy that's in the hospital has a school age brother but DCM said only the youngest seems to be affected.

I asked about HFM and she said it wasn't that but then again she can't remember so it could be a possibility. I was wondering about strep or a staph infection maybe? my DCM is trying to get info from the mom but they're still at the hospital so i understand she's a bit distracted!

The boy doesn't go to DC or any activities outside of home, just the older sibling goes to school. Last I heard from my DCM they thought maybe he got it from a shopping cart as he likes to chew on them apparently....

They still haven't determined what has sickened this school-

The symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting which is what lead to the thought that it might be food poisoning but they have since ruled that out.

(copied and pasted from news article.):

"Somewhere, USA. (ABCD) -- Dr. Head of the School, Superintendent of Elementary Schools, says XYZ Elementary School is closed today and tomorrow. There will be no school until Tuesday, after the Veterans Day holiday.

One hundred fifty of 320 students are ill as well as half of the staff. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea.

The ****** County Health Department has inspected the school and has determined there is no food-related connection to the illnesses.

A cleaning crew is being brought in today and tomorrow, which the Health Department recommended.

Buses are taking students to the homes where they have reached parents in advance.

Parents are advised not to send students to school on Tuesday if they are ill."

Sincerely hope it is nothing too serious.

I saw in the paper about the school closing! That's scary! They still don't seem to know what's going on there.

We're a bit to far from this school for there to be a connection but then again DCM text me that they have to run more tests because now they think their original diagnosis was wrong and they aren't' quite sure what it is.

I'm just hoping DCB doesn't come down with is as apparently he's been hanging out there every night with the sick boy

I used to work in the health department and school closures for noro-like illnesses happen every year. It's more common than you would think. In fact, most people have had norovirus at some point in their life. It's viral and highly contagious, but usually resolves itself within a few days without serious complications.

Yes, they are very worried about it spreading like wildfire!!!

Our highschool has 1600 students, two middle schools with 800 students each and then at least 7 other elementary schools in the area.
