We are a minimalist family, so even though 80% of my home is shared space, it's not too bad. It's been a while since I've done daycare, though, and I'm starting up again in 2 weeks. We have a front living room, and a back living room (add on). Our total is 900 sq. ft., and it's not too bad. Being minimal helps a LOT, you would not believe. Minimal and highly organized. We only have 2 bedrooms. One of them is our family bedroom, and the other is the computer room, DH's 'den'. Our bedroom has enough space to fit our queen bed, our 4 year old's toddler bed, and our 7 month old daughter's crib. Nap time is going to be in the back living room because it's darker and quieter than the front playroom.
All in all, I can clean my house fast because it's small, I have organized rooms and spaces, and we have minimal crap to find places for! Anything that doesn't have a 'place' to go, it doesn't get to stay here!

Hey, I have an entirely separate house for child care and I will admit, it is't all that wonderful at times.
More space means more stuff and more stuff usually means more "junk" and more junk means my space is just a full and overcrowded as someone who only has a living room for child care.
The grass isn't always greener on the other side.
*Plus ask my DH what two houses means..... 2 lawns to mow, 2 driveways to plow, two houses to maintain/repair, 2 mortgage payments, 2 electric bills, 2 heat bills, 2 property tax payments, etc etc etc...
I have a second house too & you are right on double the bills & work. The good side to it is, I can offer 2nd & 3rd shifts at a second house without disrupting my own home.
The trick is organization. I'm lucky to have a space just for daycare but that hasn't always been the case. Before we bought this house I did daycare on the bottom floor if a duplex. I had a small livingroom, half bath and kitchen/dining combo. I had to get incredibly creative with storage.
