    Using a Blanket with Infants

The mom of the 12mo old I watch came in this morning and ask if there are any guidelines that say when it is SAFE to begin using a blanket with her baby?

She is 12mo old now and the mom mentioned that a daycare center her older DD went to began using a blanket when she was 1.5 old.

Any ideas? I would say closer to 2yrs. But I didn't want to just throw out any numbers to her.

I believe it's 12m you can start using a blanket. That's when they hit toddler age. I would check with your licensor to double check.

I called my licensor and she had nothing specific on using blankets at all for ANY age....which surprised me.

I personally use sleep sacks until 12 months... and I have always heard 12 months is a good age to use blankets. I have never found anything to really back this up though. I think using under 12 months is extremely dangerous, however.

I have heard the no blankets for under 12 month recommendation too. They don't actually say when to start-probably b/c of liability.

As a parent I would know that IF my child were to get herself under a blanket at 12mo the fact that she would not be capable of getting out is huge. I would still be too worried about using a blanket !!

12 months is the guideline here. If she's concerned she could always use a sleepsack for awhile for peace of mind.
