playing toys kid. Well he went to see kind of like a therapist (because he doesn't talk) and they said that he's behind---it slipped out of moms mouth. I noticed today (and I bet you they did too) that he really doesn't know how to play with the toys.

I took out the car track and all the kids where pushing the cars down it. He stood there, I first told him to do it,then I showed him--still nothing, then I put his hand on the car (they are lt chunky cars perfect for little hands) and he didn't know how to grasp them and he didn't know how to push them down. This goes also for the castle, all the kids where playing with men and he was walking around in circles laughing.

I also, have a stinking suspicion that they watch alot of tv. But not cartoons, because he sees a commercial on tv and starts to laughing and going crazy, dh thinks that maybe he's immatating the dog too. Oh I can't tell him to "go play toys" because he's hysterical and I can't redirect him either because he becomes hysterical. I've now had him full time for 3 months and he's 18months old.

I would absolutely get more info about what was said at this appt. and what his future will be like. If he truly is not babbling or talking and not doing any pretend play, those ARE signs of a special needs issue. it is possible that your set up is not the right program for him, especially if there are special needs issues. its something to consider.

I'd say at 18 months old it is far to early to make such assumptions. I would continue to allow him to observe other children as they play with toys, and continue to offer the same toys rather than rotating toys so that he has time to develop an interest in specific toys/materials and then learns to manipulate and "play" with toys.

I would continue to observe, and would defintiely want more info about what the Dr. had to say, but otherwise, he sounds to me like a still developing toddler.

It doesn't sound THAT bad to me. I thought you were going to say he was 2.5 or something, but only 18months? I don't think that's too far off. I have several kids around this age and they're just so different. My DS at 13 months is almost exactly like a 24 month old! But then there's a baby only 10 days younger than my DS and isn't walking yet. I had a 2 year old I swore was probably DD because he wasn't talking, only lined up cars didn't "play" cars, etc. but now finally finally finally he's starting to talk and show some intelligence and I'm glad I kept my mouth shut because he might actually turn out to be totally normal.

I'd say 18months is too young to expect what you're expecting, it seems like you're describing 2years+ behavior and he's still just little.

My 3 year old nephew did not play with toys until he was about 2. He just wasn't interested. He occasionally would carry something around in his hand, but wouldn't play. We stopped buying toys around 18 months b/c they were just collecting dust. If he had gone to daycare during that time, they would have thought something was wrong...

Now, your earrings, necklace, cell phone, tv remote, what-nots in the living room...he would play with that all day. Take it away and give him an interesting toy, he wouldn't hold it, just like this little guy.

He also had what seemed to be a speech delay, because he'd try his hardest to talk...but all that would ever come out was "ththbthpppt", even way after he gave up his paci. He'd cry because no one could understand him.

Now, at 2 years 11 months...he can tell you the name of every dinosaur, every part of a train, is potty-trained, can dress himself and brush teeth alone and speaks as well as most of the 4 year olds in my class.

So I agree with Crystal as well, its too early to make any diagnosis.
