Does anyone use High Scope? What are the pros and cons?

Hi! I've been lurking here for a while and haven't signed up yet, but my name is Katy and I'm starting a preschool out of my home in about a month. I have previous experience as a preschool curriculum coordinator and director.

Anywhooo...it seems that it's pretty common for home-based child care to use a pre-planned/boxed curriculum. I have never used a pre-planned curriculum and have always planned my own using High Scope principles. High Scope isn't a pre-planned curriculum in itself, it doesn't come with particular activities or anything. It's a way of thinking about children as active learners and planning activities based on their interests and their development. I LOVE High/Scope principles and for me, it's the best way to plan activities for children.

High/Scope does have a literacy curriculum called Growing Readers, which has specific pre-planned activities that have a LOT of flexibility to use as you see fit for your group of children. I believe they are also coming out with a Math curriculum (maybe already out).

    Hope that helps!
    Katy
