Do You Send Home For Just A Fever ?

DCG came in this morning, right before she got in the door she puked a little on mom...She says that she done it once before over the weekend, but was fine afterwards. She did not come yesterday cause her grandmother kept her. She felt warm this morning while mom was here, but since she had been screaming and crying and in a heated car I thought that could be the reason. Well all she wanted to do was lay around this morning so about 1/2 hour or so after she was dropped off I checked her temp..it was 100.5

I waited another 1/2 hour cause I thought it still may be from where she was so upset. Well it was 100.8 with one thermometer and with the other it was 101.2 (axillary temp. with one added) She has no other symptoms, so mom asked if she needs to come get her. Since my son has gotten up she has started to play a little.

So Im not sure what to do.. there is a reason she has a fever, just not sure what it is.

I see progressing fever, lethargy, irritability, vomiting, history of illness.... Not just fever.

Absolutely needs to be sent home. Should also be out of daycare until she has been fever free for at least 24 hours unless you have a different illness policy.
      What does your handbook say?

I agree. You had vomit first now a fever. I would absolutely send home without a second thought.

I don't care WHY a child has symptoms - they have symtoms, they are going home!

For me, it all depends. If there is any other symptom, I will send home at 101*.

I had one last week that was teething, brought in two. She ran as high as 102.5*. I called Mom to let her know, and let her know that I would give Motrin and a sponge bath. The little one was happy, cheerful, eating and sleeping well. No signs of an ear infection, cold, or anything else. The fevers lasted for 3 days. I didn't send her home because #1, Mom has lost so much work time due to illness for both of them (got written up at work) and #2, there were no other symptoms.

I sent one home last month with a 101.2*. She was very lethargic.

She went home, and magically in about 2 hours at home...mom emails me and says "Shes fine now " after she slept her fever was gone..She will be there tomorrow. They are moving so she is off today to pack.

So when she gets here I will check her again, and if she has a fever any today, I will be sending her home. Poor baby !! She feel asleep in my floor before lunch, wouldn't eat hardly anything and then went right to sleep as soon as I laid them down. Completly out of her normal behavior.

                  I agree.

Every so often I clearly see that the symptoms actually are because of teething (you know, the most popular excuse) and I won't. But for a fever? I absolutely would.

Is it really true that kids get fevers from teething?

It is possible to get a low grade fever on the day the tooth actually erupts from the gum.

You will see the redness and swelling to the gum. There is no missing it.

If it is over 100* or for more than a few hours it is NOT from teething.

I have an out in my policies for a child that requires more care than I am able to offer and needs to be at home. I think the other thing is that after a while you know the kids in your care and you can tell when someone is off and use your own judgement when calling a parent. Since I don't call for every sniffle and cough parents know that I think something is wrong when I do call.

Yep, the kids are always fine once they get home

A kid needs to be fever-free 24 hours before returning. If they come back after that 24 hours and get a fever in my home, they are out for 48!

                              Bye Bye.

If you keep a child home with a fever, you can return when the fever is gone. If I send your child home with a fever, you can't come back for 2 days.
